Wanna meet Ash in Nightmare City and then later realise 'oh wait he's hanging out with Noctis and Ignis'? Ash only very briefly met the previous Prompto so he'd be downplaying ever knowing him since it'd feel too weird, especially since he knows more about how Noctis felt about him vanishing than Prompto himself, if that makes sense
