THE BASICS

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS POKEMON PROM?

Pokemon Prom is a yearly event where everybody and their Pokemon get to go PARTY HARD in sweet sweet formalwear and generally have a good time. We’re talkin’ music, dancing, big ol’ buffet tables, all that good stuff.

SO WE GET TO GO BACK TO THE ELITE FOUR’S SWEET SWEET MANSION, RIGHT?

Not this year! After the very unfortunate incident at last year’s Prom, the Elite Four not only had to repair the whole place and get rid of all those Rocket tunnels, but also... aren’t really feeling like hosting a ton of guests. Like, really aren't feeling it. Bruno doesn't want to deal with having to beef up the security, Karen continues to get rage flashbacks any time someone says the word 'rocket', and Lance is still hunting down that scrapbook.

So in the interest of hanging onto their last remaining shreds of sanity, they’d rather keep their at-long-last refurbished vacation spot to themselves for the time being.

However, they HAVE pulled a few strings to ensure that the heroics of last year are rewarded with a proper party this year... at Resort Gorgeous in the Sevii Islands!

OH MY GOSH!!! ... WAIT, THIS PROM ISN’T GOING TO COST US AN ARM AND A LEG OR HAVE AN ATTENDANCE CAP, IS IT?

Not at all! While the Resort is normally very pricey and has a limited number of accommodations, Selphy has generously set up free lodging for attendees in large, very swanky tents near the beach, so they can enjoy the balmy ocean breeze and watch the Staryus light up in the water at night! Considering the standard price-tag, getting past the gates for free is frankly the "opportunity of a lifetime" (at least according to Selphy).

Of course, anybody who would like to pay for an upgrade into one of the resort’s spacious bungalows may do so for the usual price of P100,000/night.

As for transportation, this is also all taken care of! NO Captain Garfield and his penny-pinching Rattata this time!

Starting April 7th, standard invitations delivered by Pidgey will start making their way into player characters’ hands, complete with photos and descriptions of the resort’s amenities and activities. Included in the invitation will be instructions to utilize the warp pads located in each Pokemon Center to make your way to Olivine or Vermilion, where ferries will take people to the islands and then on to the resort! Or, if your character has not been to either city before, they may request a flying escort to pick them up near their location. Either way, no need to spend a lot of time surfing through Five Island unless you really want to take in the sights.

MY CHARACTER’S REALLY NOT INTERESTED IN PARTIES, BUT I AM! HOW DO I MOTIVATE MY STICK-IN-THE-MUD CHARACTER TO ATTEND?

We’ve tried to include a little something for every type of character, including more introverted or adventurous ones! Characters who prefer solitude and would rather avoid a fancy shindig will have quieter lounge areas to hang out in, as well as casual-attire spaces. Those interested in research might find the library's collection of books, art, and photographs of rare Pokemon and Sevii island history/culture fascinating. And those who’d much rather go on an adventure than put on a dress might find Mantine Surfing or a tour of Lost Cave right up their alley!

Still no? Perhaps their friends or Pokemon can encourage them into it! This event isn't just for the trainers, after all — it's a get-together for your rosters, too! (Why should the humans be the only ones to have fun, right?) The resort has plenty of room for Pokemon to spend time together, play, and interact! Maybe their Marill nearly got stolen by Team Rocket last time and is still moping about not getting to have a good Prom.

WELL, I HATE PARTIES AND PARTY EVENTS.

That’s okay! As we said, the event is entirely optional, and no one is obligated to come! Granted, characters who choose to stay behind will probably find that there’s not a whole lot going on in the interim, but hey, peace and quiet! Either way, if you'd rather avoid this event altogether, you're perfectly welcome to!

I’M NEWER TO THE GAME AND HAVE NEVER ATTENDED A PROM BEFORE! WHAT’S IT LIKE?

Don’t worry, this post should have just about everything you need to know about what your character will be seeing and doing during the event! Further down you'll find a map and descriptions of all the areas and activities in the resort your character will have access to. And if you’ve still got questions, feel free to ask them below!

If you’re curious about prom events in general, check out the first and second Pokemon Prom posts from years past!

LAST YEAR THERE WAS A BIG ROCKET PLOT AT THE END OF PROM. WILL THERE BE ANYTHING LIKE THAT THIS YEAR?

While there will almost certainly be Rocket attendees with instructions to keep a sharp eye out for Pokemon/expensive jewelry/nice silverware/those little hotel soaps to steal, Team Rocket has no plans for an organized attack the way they did last year. For one thing, it's really hard to dig tunnels into an island.

However, there will be another event at the end of the party wherein players will be able to overcome a challenge and get either a good or bad ending, depending on whether or not the win conditions are met. It will not be anywhere near as involved as Rocket Prom was, but there will be an extra log with a simple win condition based on the number of people who tag in. What exactly the challenge is will be a surprise, but is intended to be the launching point for future events!

SO HOW DOES THE WIN CONDITION WORK, AND ARE THERE SIGN UPS? IS THIS REQUIRED?

Nothing too fancy-- as we've done in past events, there will be a 'Sign-Up' thread on this post where you can mark your character down as participating in the mystery event. On the last day of Prom, an extra IC log will be posted and characters will check in back over here once they have tagged it in any way, whether that be by topleveling themselves or responding to someone else’s thread. The tag can be any length and can consist of anything (battling a foe, supporting other characters, running and hiding, taking selfies...). If the number of characters who check in with their activity on the log adds up to at least 75% of the number who initially signed up, congratulations! GOOD END! If not... well, we'll see what happens!

That said: the extra event is NOT required participation for characters attending Prom, and will not interfere with most of the party. If you do not wish to join in or don’t think you’ll be able to tag into an extra log, there’s no need to sign up, and you can always say that your character left a little early or simply wasn’t present at the part of the resort where the event is taking place. Likewise, you can still participate in the extra event even if you didn't sign up-- your participation just won't affect the win condition requirements!

So, tl;dr: If your character wishes to attend Prom and participate in the extra event log, please comment to the SIGN-UP thread HERE by midnight EST, April 14th so that we can get an accurate count. Then, once the mystery event log goes up and you've responded to it, reply to the CHECK-IN thread directly below it!

WILL THERE BE PRIZES IF WE WIN?

There will be prizes if you win! Without revealing too much, Selphy and the other citizens of Five Island are going to be both extremely grateful for the efforts of brave trainers who step up to the plate AND very concerned about maintaining a good public image for tourism purposes-- so every character who participates in the extra event will receive:
  • An all-expenses-covered weekend pass to Resort Gorgeous, which will be good for a full year and can be cashed in at any time. Although, the resort might be closed to the public for at least a little while after Prom wraps up...
  • One Hidden Ability Candy, generously donated by ???????
  • A beautiful, hand-painted kite made by one of the local kite-makers. Can be a portrait of one of your character's Pokemon, or maybe just their favorite Flying-type.
  • And last but not least, win or lose, this event will result in new NPCs and world-building for the world of Victory Road!

WHAT'S THE ITINERARY OF THE EVENT?

    IC Itinerary:
Friday, April 13th: Characters will arrive on the ferries throughout the day and get a chance to unpack, settle in, and enjoy the resort.
Saturday, April 14th: PARTY TIME. After a full day of beach vacation-ing, it's time to get all dressed up for the main gala!
Sunday, April 15th: The final full day at the resort! Characters may do whatever they wish, but there will be a special nighttime kite-flying ceremony involving paper lanterns after sundown as a grand finale to the weekend!
Monday, April 16th: Whether your character stays in the area or heads back to the mainland, it's sadly time to leave the Resort. The E4 can only pull strings for so long!
    OOC Itinerary:
Friday, April 13th: The Prom Log will be posted, which will be a catchall for all three IC days of the prom.
Sunday, April 15th: The Extra Event log will be posted at 12 AM EST
Monday, April 16th: The Extra Event win condition must be met by 10 PM EST. Feel free to continue tagging in this log as long as you like, but the check in will be closed and the good or bad end decided! A final wrap-up post detailing the IC aftermath will be posted either that night or the next day.

SO... NOT EVEN A HINT ABOUT WHAT THE MYSTERY EVENT IS GONNA BE, HUH?

Did you know that the Silph Co. catalog sells really cute accessories for Type: Null, including little bowties and cravats? In addition to their many other skills, they can also be your dapper little party friend!

We just thought that was neat.

    THIS YEAR'S VENUE

    KEY:
GREEN areas are indoor, above-ground resort facilities that are completely open to all guests!

BLUE areas are more facilities, but with a twist: they're technically underwater! The biggest feature Resort Gorgeous boasts over similar venues is the incredible up-close-and-personal view of Five Island's vibrant coral reefs. Don't worry, environmentalists-- the construction process was strictly regulated to make sure it disturbed the native flora and fauna as little as possible!

RED areas are for employees only! You won't find anything more luxurious than a lot of bustling staff back there.

    LOCATIONS AND ACTIVITIES:

    A. BALLROOM
Looking to dance the night away in fancy clothes without worrying about heatstroke? Starting at 7 PM nightly, the air-conditioned indoor ballroom is the place to be! The decor just barely treads the line between tasteful and gaudy, and which side of that line it falls on depends on the eye of the beholder. Still, it’s a good place to dance, and the live music ought to get just about anyone tapping their toes. Along the north wall is a refreshments bar stocked with just about every kind of freshly squeezed juice you can think of, as well as several tables laid out with all kinds of hors d'oeuvres.
    B. DINING ROOM
Those looking for a true fine dining experience need look no further than the main dining room, where the Kalosian chef whips up a superb menu of fresh ingredients, and while there are some classic Kalos dishes, the majority are elevated versions of the local island fare. There is no charge for eating here, and there are new items on the menu each night, so even those who want to get their fancy on every night of Prom won’t wind up with any repeat meals. Just be sure to dress nicely-- the dress code in here is enforced, and nobody in sandals and an open Alolan-print shirt will be seated.
    C. LIBRARY
A cozy place lined with tall bookshelves, the resort's library is an avid reader's dream. Guests can rest in cushy teal armchairs with books on the history and culture of the Sevii Islands, old archives of seafaring maps, studies on the rare species of Pokemon that can be found amongst the islands, and photo albums of lush locales and underwater treasures. There are, of course, pamphlets on various attractions across the islands that guests are free to take, but these seem to have a specific lean towards academic and exploratory activities rather than touristy hotspots, of which there can be plenty of pamphlets found in the lobby and individual bungalows already.
    D. AVIARY
The salty sea breeze wafts into this tropical garden where Chatots can come and go as they please from open skylights. Here, they rest and enjoy the company of guests who might prefer a quieter place to relax away from the main festivities. The resort offers the garden's own supply of berries for guests to feed any visiting feathered friends, and if you're patient enough, the Chatots may let you pet them!

NOTE: There is a strict no-capture rule in place in the aviary to maintain the ecosystem of the local area, as well as the trust of the Pokemon.
    E. SPA
Guests can not only get a world-class massage, facial, mani-pedi, or any number of other treatments at the resort’s spa, but they can look out the windows in each treatment room to see a gorgeous underwater vista spread out before them. Pokemon can be frequently seen swimming by, and the more curious ones might stop to peek in! Partygoers will be able to get treatments at half off the normal price (think standard Nice Resort Spa Pricing), and there’s steam rooms, saunas, and a jacuzzi pool available for free. Just settle in, listen to the soft sounds of Spa Music (™), drink a nice cold glass of coconut-cucumber water, and relaaaax.
    F. LOUNGE
Want to look out into the ocean without the smell of eucalyptus essential oil in your nose? There’s a place for that, too. Down the hall from the spa is an open room lined with comfy, stylish chairs facing out the viewing windows, most with tables nearby. While the menu isn't quite as main-coursey as what you can get in the dining room above, there's still a generous selection of fancy, delicious snacks and drinks to be ordered. Some of Selphy’s book collection can be found on shelves on the far wall, the selection is small down here so that it can be rotated frequently--nobody wants humidity-damaged books. The center of the room is kept clear of furniture, in case anybody feels like dancing under the sea to the tune of the jazz that plays from the room’s speakers.
    G. TOUCH POOL
Off of the spa there is a long, thin room, dimly lit, and mostly underwater - a thick, curved glass wall covers the majority, allowing you to see into the surrounding ocean, and along the glass wall there is a special touch pool! Lit from the bottom and lined with soft sand, small wild Pokemon can come in from the surrounding ocean and allow themselves to be pet and seen by curious guests. Mantyke are common visitors, though judging by the informative plaques around the room, you're likely to see many a different species depending on when you visit.

NOTE: There is a strict no-capture rule in place in the touch pool to maintain the ecosystem of the local area, as well as the trust of the Pokemon.
    H. SUN DECK
Just outside the dining room and library, right over the underwater section of the main hotel, is perched a large wooden deck. Lounge chairs with umbrellas are lined up along the edges, and in the center there’s a small but well-stocked bar serving alcoholic drinks to anyone of age, and refreshing fruit juices to anyone who isn’t. There are a few tables set up near the dining room too, for those who would rather eat out in the fresh air. Careful not to feed any of the Wingull riding the breeze nearby, though—they aren’t as well behaved as the Chatot in the aviary, and the moment one gets tossed an extra dinner roll, ten more are liable to show up to see if there’s more to be had.

WHAT'S IT LIKE OUTSIDE THE MAIN BUILDING?

The rest of the resort includes several fabulous pools, fountains, a more casual beach bar/open air restaurant, and several kinds of sport-courts! Follow the pathway down to the white sand beach and find a number of lounge chairs and umbrellas, where you can raise a tiny flag to request food or drink service! The Resort also now boasts a small pod of trained Mantine brought over from Alola, as well as a few seasoned Mantine surfers to show guests the ropes! Snorkels and flippers are available, and volleyball nets and horseshoes sets can be set up on request. At night, firepits are carried out and set up at regular intervals, perfect for hanging out around and maybe toasting some fancy marshmallows, or even just providing light for midnight walks.

WHERE ARE THE SLEEPING TENTS LOCATED AND WHAT ARE THEY LIKE?

Mostly along the beach north of the main building, well above high-tide levels! Each one fits about four people, and can be zipped shut should the occupants desire a little privacy. All tents have a lovely view of the water (and the Mantine-surfing lessons that take place during the day, if you're the sort of person who likes to sit in the shade and watch clumsy tourists wipe out over and over) and are attended by a task force of attentive staff who can be summoned with the push of a button to deliver clean towels, refill coolers with bottled water, or remove a Pyukumuku from your tent and throw it back into the ocean.

DOES MY CHARACTER HAVE TO STAY WITHIN THE RESORT THE ENTIRE TIME?

No, they are free to head off-site and back to the main island at any time to visit the many shops, fly kites in the meadow, take guided spelunking tours of nearby Lost Cave... There's no curfew, and they'll just have to flash a keycard to get back in, but in all fairness, the most active nightlife on the island tends to take place in the resort itself, so most roamers tend to head back in around sundown!

WHAT KINDS OF POKEMON ARE THERE TO CATCH?

While both the aviary and the touch pool have "no-catch" policies in place, the rest of the resort is catch-friendly! All the Pokemon normally found around Resort Gorgeous can be found around the resort. In fact, in order to help draw in wealthy trainer guests, the resort actually boasts slightly higher populations of the rarer Pokemon than the rest of the island does, thanks to selective feeding done by the staff to encourage their presence.

The one species that only seems to be located around the resort and not the rest of the island is Pyukumuku.

    Which are everywhere.

    AND BATTLES?

Battles are not permitted in most of the indoor areas, or anywhere that can expect lots of guests at once (ex: the pool. No one wants to have to frantically swim out of the way of a Rock Throw), but outdoors they're highly encouraged! In fact, in addition to some of the sporty amenities like tennis courts and nets for beach volleyball, there are also small arenas for anyone who feels like having a friendly battle with their fellow guests.

WHAT ARE THE DRESS / BEHAVIORAL CODES LIKE?

For casual everyday areas, there really aren't any dress codes-- no tourist wants to be dolled up 24/7. But for areas like the ballroom and the fine dining area, folks should at least be business casual if not more.

Conduct-wise, the same goes. Anyone sticking their straws up their nose and making silly faces at the tables around them will be asked to leave the fine dining area and maybe go order their food from the beach bar instead!

The rest of the resort is much more laid-back when it comes to fun and goofing off, but unsurprisingly anyone who is actively harassing other guests or caught causing damage to the facilities will be given one warning (and charged for whatever they broke) before being removed from the premises and given a ticket home. Y'all might be here for free, but there are still other guests around who paid a pretty penny to be here and wouldn't appreciate having a bunch of rowdy other-worlders blasting Iron Tail from a boombox over the live music in the ballroom, or letting their Aipom pick the cucumbers off of other peoples' faces in the spa and eat them.

    I HAVE OTHER QUESTIONS!

    Ask them HERE!

IMPORTANT PLOT INFO FOR THIS YEAR'S PROM

    ULTRA BEASTS?!?!?

    Ultra Beasts.

    WHAT DO WE DO?!

    Whatever your characters would do!

There's a lot of noise and panicking going on (which honestly is only making the situation worse-- thanks, tourists and scared wild Pokemon! Gosh.) but a cool head could definitely be a boon in the crisis. Maybe your character will take charge and try to usher others to safety, or maybe they'll try to confront Nihilego head-on with their Pokemon. Or maybe they'll hide and cry hysterically. All reactions are valid when confronted with eldritch abominations from beyond.

WHAT WILL OUR CHARACTERS FEEL IN THE FACE OF NIHILEGO?

It depends on the character, but most will experience some degree of terror and dread, even if they aren't normally frightened of odd creatures. The Nihilego give off an intense feeling of existential wrongness, as well as an aura of power that will stand out even to trainers who are used to dealing with very strong Pokemon.

    WHAT ABOUT OUR CHARACTERS' POKEMON?

The same, but even harder! Pokemon are often much more sensitive than people to situations in which something is terribly off, and will instinctively respond to the presence of Ultra Beasts with fear. This will not necessarily override their other instincts, though-- trained Pokemon will have a much easier time staying calm than the wild ones, so unless an individual team-member is particularly flighty and prone to panic (or just selfish), no one will need to worry about their Pokemon running off on them in fear.

    ARE THEY IN DANGER?

Yes. While the Nihilego aren't evil or actively chasing people down and beaming them up or anything weird like that, they are lashing out and causing damage to the landscape and nearby structures-- which means anyone who gets in the way could easily get hurt in the chaos. Pokemon who attack the Nihilego will also be attacked back, which means they will suffer damage the same way they do in a normal battle.

WILL THE MODS BE NPC'ING NIHILEGO IN THREADS?

No! We trust everyone to play their fights, flights, and Legend Seeker-style fangasms over these jellyfish cryptids out! If you have any questions about how Nihilego should be portrayed that aren't answered here, just ask on the Questions thread below!

MY CHARACTER IS PSYCHIC AND/OR CAN COMMUNICATE WITH POKEMON-- WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF THEY TRY TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE NIHILEGO?

No clear communication can be had with the Nihilego, even for those with that special knack for talking to their 'mons-- instead, any attempt will be met with a jarring deluge of alien sensations, static, and gibberish belonging to no known language. There's absolutely something there, but like incompatible frequencies, the human brain alone will not be able to make sense of it all.

However, one thing will be clear: whatever the Ultra Beasts are emitting, it is highly emotional, and not in a positive way.

Also, certain studious individuals may note... the least garbled bits are not dissimilar to what plays on the radio when you're visiting the Ruins of Alph...

    CAN WE CATCH NIHILEGO?

    No, unfortunately.

The Nihilego seem extremely sensitive to the presence of Pokeballs of all kinds, and will slap any thrown away with a speed and accuracy almost unnatural-- watch out, because getting beaned in the head with your own Pokeball returned at high velocity is probably one of the more embarrassing ways to get a severe concussion.

    CAN WE BEFRIEND NIHILEGO?

That's an incredibly admirable sentiment that a lot of characters will probably share, but for this event, no. The Nihilego are very upset, and do not seem to understand gestures of friendship, including but not limited to: offering them Rare Candies, offering them a handshake, offering them the tourist child next to you, etc. However, characters willing to put significant effort into calming them or making them feel less in danger will be somewhat successful. This will be very difficult, given the chaos, but it is viable. Your character is free to try anything! If there are questions, feel free to bring them to us.

    CAN WE BATTLE NIHILEGO?

Absolutely-- but it will be very difficult.

The one for-sure, no-room-for-debate, immediately-verifiable fact about these things is that they are horrifyingly strong. Even Level 100 Pokemon will find that their strength is being matched.

SO DOES THAT MEAN EVERYONE WITH LOWER-LEVELED POKEMON IS JUST SCREWED?

    Quite the opposite!

Observant trainers will probably notice that the Nihilego are more reactive than they are aggressive-- a wanton attack will be met with equal force, but otherwise, as destructive as they are, they don't seem to be actively pursuing/targeting anything-- human or Pokemon.

Attacking the Nihilego with brute force alone will be frustrating, even for people whose teams are stacked with Level 100's. Instead, strategizing and using carefully-directed attacks to shift the flow of battle rather than just damage the opponents will aid anyone who tries it, even the Youngster who only brought their level 10 Pidgey. Fight smart, not hard! Look out for each other! Try to minimize the destruction to the resort and the main island alike!

    WHAT ABOUT TYPE: NULL?

Ah, yes... what about Type: Null, indeed.

Anyone who, by accident or design, winds up pitting their Type: Null against the Nihilego will make a discovery.

No matter how glitchy, how awkward, how ungainly that Type: Null normally is... everything changes once the Ultra Beast is in their sights.

They won't get stronger or suddenly morph into immaculate battle gods, no. What they will do is lock onto the Nihilego with the intensity of a border collie, stand between it and their trainer, and stare. Them. Down.

Nihilego will respond to Type: Null by noticeably keeping their distance and flashing their lights in rapid, incomprehensible patterns-- even a human will be able to tell that they seriously do not want to get any closer.

Perhaps trainers who team up can use this to their advantage...

WHAT ABOUT THE RIFT IN SPACE? IS IT STILL THERE?

Why yes, it is! It's super obvious and frankly horrifying.

But maybe what came out can be put back in...

HOW WILL THE WIN CONDITIONS INFLUENCE THIS?

Either way, an ally will be arriving to aid player characters in the fight (they will not be NPC'd by mods, but rather can be included in player characters' threads in any way you see fit!)-- the win conditions will determine which ally makes it there first, which in turn will alter the end result of this event.

SO, if you signed up for the Mystery Event, remember to check in here with a link to your tag on the bonus log in order to be counted!

WHAT IF I DON'T WANT TO PARTICIPATE?

Even with the signups, this is still 100% optional!

Any character who decided to do something else that evening and isn't in the part of the resort that the kite-flying is taking place in may wind up not noticing a thing until it's all over! Maybe they decided to hang out in the underground lounge playing a board game with their Pokemon instead, or they've just got their headphones in and volume turned up real loud on their music. However you feel would be realistic for your character to be uninvolved in the event is kosher!

I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS THAT AREN'T COVERED HERE!

    LIBRARY PLOTTING

    [personal profile] alltoblame 2018-04-08 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
SO a bunch of us have mentioned our nerds hanging out in the library and doing research available there, on plurk. Since not everyone has everyone else on plurk I thought it might be a good idea to toss up a plotting plurk for players to get together and plan CR at the library or outside of the library during research breaks (please stop reading for five seconds guys, eat a sandwich.)

I would be up to doing a top level library mingle for everyone to tag each other as a group if they'll be spending a majority of time there or something (thread hopping up to individual players). Not sure if there'd be any interest in that or if people would rather stick to regular threads though.

    THOUGHTS/SUGGESTIONS/OTHER IDEAS etc. welcome!

NULL PARTY aka hey did you want another plotting top level

    [personal profile] meteorman 2018-04-09 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
So it was also kicked around on Plurk that everyone currently in possession of a Null or 'Silphally' and who was also bringing them along to Prom could have them have a playdate on the beach. Y'know, let them stretch their mismatched legs and hang out with other Pokémon like them for once. I was going to put up a toplevel for that; this is just a heads up in case it affects anyone's plans on the roster they're bringing!
