ULTRA OCTOBER
Jeez, what a weekend...
For anyone wanting to catch up on what all went down, be sure to read up on the EV News Posts over in the !star shower tag in
victory_road!
But to summarize...

IT'S TIME.
INFORMATION
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
DON'T WORRY, despite the chaotic final news broadcast of the weekend, there aren't currently any reported injuries to people OR Pokemon!
It's still very alarming, but not a disaster... yet!
WHERE ARE ALL THESE PORTALS OPENING?
Absolutely all over the place!
There are multiple wormholes appearing all over Johto and Kanto, seemingly without rhyme or reason. Unlike at Camp Alpha, they don't appear to be connected to any one place or occurrence. Maybe you're seeing one off in the distance, or maybe popped open directly above the Pokemon Center you were crashing in!
WHICH ULTRA BEASTS ARE NOW LOOSE? AND HOW MANY OF THEM?
The types of Ultra Beasts at large in the wild are: Nihilego, Buzzwole, Pheromosa, Xurkitree, Kartana, Guzzlord, Poipole, Naganadel, Stakataka, and Blacephalon. If you’re unfamiliar with Ultra Beasts, you can find a list with pictures, types, and descriptions over on Bulbapedia! In the interest of not totally overrunning the regions for the entire month, they will not be coming through any single wormhole in a massive swarm (unless it's Kartana. Those guys are jerks). Instead, there will be many wormholes, each one opening long enough for several Ultra Beasts to slip through, opening and closing at scattered locations over the course of the entire month.
They are not region-specific, either-- any of the listed Beasts can be encountered anywhere in either region!
WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO BE ACTING LIKE? THE LAST TIMES THEY’VE BEEN HERE HAVE BEEN DISASTERS, WILL IT JUST BE A NONSTOP APOCALYPSE ALL MONTH?
While this is definitely a big deal, this will not be a month-long concentrated attack! The Ultra Beasts that have come through before were confused, frightened, or frenzied, and never got much of an opportunity to get used to being in another dimension. Since these are trickling out at a more gradual pace over a longer period of time, they won't overwhelm any one area.
Additionally, unlike either of the prior incidents, these Ultra Beasts seem much more focused and purposed... almost like they're searching for something. They will battle if challenged, and may cause no small amount of chaos where they appear, but for the most part they don't seem to be out to attack people or destroy cities.
That said, they are definitely not familiar with this universe or its inhabitants and may behave in unpredictable ways, so engage with caution. Some will be traveling alone, while others (usually the smaller kinds) can be found in groups of up to ten.
HOW WILL POKEMON BE REACTING TO THE ULTRA BEASTS?
Pokemon both wild and trained will, for the first week or so, react with the same general existential dread towards the Ultra Beasts that they've had in past encounters! Wild Pokemon will panic at the sight of them (so if you’re looking to find a Beast, keeping an eye out for lots of wild Pokemon suddenly trying to get away from a place would be a good start!), and trained Pokemon will be, at the very least, deeply unsettled.
The only particularly stand-out behaviors are also ones we've seen before:
As the month goes on, the reactions from the wild Pokemon (except for the above five species) will get less extreme, but will never be totally calm. NPCs will be assisting many wild Pokemon who are exhausted or lost, organized by Pokemon Center staff or particularly competent volunteers. They could use all the help they can get, especially in the first weeks, so PCs will be welcome to volunteer!
WHAT WAYS WILL OUR CHARACTERS BE ABLE TO INTERACT WITH THE ULTRA BEASTS?
When it comes to direct interaction with the Beasts, characters will find themselves with a choice they didn't really have before.
Obviously, one option is to battle-- just as in the last two events they featured in, characters can choose to battle the Beasts, either by direct challenge or in self-defense. Like before, the Beasts will be extremely powerful, matching even Level 100 Pokemon, requiring strategy more than brute strength alone to overcome.
Ultra Beasts will not understand speech, but will understand gestures and tone far better than words. If an Ultra Beast is spooked (which will happen if challenged to battle or if they feel threatened), they will attack until they are defeated in battle or flee. As in previous events, beating them is more about strategy than levels. The strength of the Beasts will vary, but it is possible for any trainer to battle one and win if they fight smart!
(HINT: Now might be a good time to trot over to Saffron City and sign up to be a Type: Null beta tester if you meet the requirements!)
The other option, which was unfortunately out of the question during their previous appearances, is...
... F-FRIENDSHIP??
That's right-- because these Ultra Beasts aren't spewing forth in a panicked chaotic frenzy, it is actually possible for calm and collected trainers, with the fortitude to overcome the inherent fear and unease these creatures inspire in people and Pokemon alike, to engage in some degree of communication with the Ultra Beasts.
While they cannot understand speech, they are sensitive to the moods or "energy" of humans, and may be willing to engage with characters who manage to successfully come off as nonthreatening and trustworthy. They may be offered treats (although they won't know what to do with them, they might at least be able to figure out that it's a gift or peace offering of some kind!) and might noticeably attempt to interpret gestures and hand/body motions-- yes, this does mean that interpretive dance might in face be a valid way of communicating with them.
It's also worth noting that fighting may not necessarily automatically preclude a character from befriending an Ultra Beast-- it would seem they have personalities (albeit very... alien ones) and a particularly rowdy or "tough guy" Ultra Beast (... Buzzwole. We're talking about Buzzwole) may come to respect a trainer who bests it in fair combat.
Regardless of your character's own methods, the Beasts are focused on their mission, whatever it may be-- but if enough effort is put into communicating with one, they may linger around them for a day or two, or even try to convince your character to follow them as they search for whatever it is they're trying to find.
WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO FIND??
Unfortunately, they can't seem to communicate that, no matter how hard they try. They're just too alien-- it's taken two giant disasters and lots of running around and screaming for them to even get to this point.
But that doesn't mean that characters can't see what they can find out!
CAN OUR CHARACTERS CAPTURE THE ULTRA BEASTS?
No. They'll react to a thrown Pokeball the same way they'd react to a thrown rock, and either attack or flee.
And, assuming they don't dodge it, it won't even work if it hits. The Pokeball doesn't seem to register them as a Pokemon and won't activate.
Attempting to capture one will also pretty much ruin any chances of gaining its trust, unsurprisingly.
WHAT IF MY CHARACTER SENDS OUT A TYPE: NULL OR SILPHALLY WHILE TRYING TO BEFRIEND AN ULTRA BEAST?
Feel free to check out the previous Ultra Beast event info posts for more details, but the long and short of it is that for some reason, Ultra Beasts are really, really freaked out by Type: Null/Silphally.
If confronted with a Null or its evolution, Ultra Beasts will invariably try to flee-- even if it was having a previously-positive interaction with someone. They will not return until the Null is gone, and trying to rebuild the connection will be difficult-- assuming they didn't just nope off entirely.
Why do they react so strongly to the customizable science dogs, you ask?
That much is a mystery... for now...
WHAT’S THE AETHER FOUNDATION DOING DURING ALL OF THIS?
WELL, AETHER SURE DOESN'T LOOK GOOD IN THE PUBLIC EYE ABOUT NOW...
The agent who crashed the news broadcast (evidently he was in the building as a liason between EV News and the Foundation but was not expected to be part of that evening's program) was arrested and escorted from the premises, and the Aether Foundation was quick to put out a statement condemning his actions, claiming that the agent was bitter about being recently "dismissed" and is no longer affiliated with them.
Other than that, though, they've been weirdly quiet.
There's a lot fewer of them around in the towns they'd previously had a large presence in, and they haven't said anything about the explosion of wormholes...
AND HOW ABOUT THE OTHER NPCS, LIKE THE GYM LEADERS AND THE LEAGUE?
Unlike the Aether Foundation, the Gym Leaders and Elite Four will be pretty visibly doing their part out in the open; organizing safety and rescue efforts, working to reassure the public and keep hysteria from breaking out, and helping to herd large or more aggressive Beasts away from cities and back towards the wormholes. In order to avoid throwing off their routines too hard during this time, the Gym Leaders will coordinate their schedules to allow each of them to continue accepting challenges in their Gyms (so don't worry about getting those badges! ... Maybe thank them for their hard work after challenging them, though!)
Professor Oak will have a special announcement sent to every registered trainer and breeder, informing them that while the Pokedex won’t register the Ultra Beasts, to send in any observations they make to him so that they can be catalogued.
Team Rocket will, of course, be very interested in these weird powerful aliens, and instruct members to see if there’s any way to trap or restrain Beasts. After a number of destructive incidents in the first week, they will update this to hurriedly order everyone not to bring restrained Beasts back to the Goldenrod base for now. Rocket player characters may absolutely contribute to said incidents.
AND THIS IS ALL HAPPENING ALL MONTH LONG?
Yes.
While characters will likely find themselves getting accustomed to the excitement as time goes on, the wormhole activity will not slow down. In fact, the Ultra Beasts will seem to grow increasingly rattled as the end of the month draws near... maybe they're... running out of time or something?
WHAT IF I DON'T WANT MY CHARACTER INVOLVED IN THIS AT ALL?
Like all events, participation in Ultra October is optional!
While this is a quite a large game-wide event that your character will certainly be aware of, they will not be required to engage with the Ultra Beasts or otherwise have their lives disrupted if you don't want them to. Feel free to assume that they are just particularly lucky when it comes to avoiding Ultra Beast encounters!
AETHER VS. ULTRA
SO ABOUT THAT EMERGENCY BULLETIN... TIME TO FINALLY SEE WHAT THE AETHER FOUNDATION IS UP TO?
IT'S TIME. WHAT ARE THOSE UNIFORMED DWEEBS HIDING?!
THIS IS A LOT! QUICK, SOMEONE SUMMARIZE!!
After somewhat falling from grace in the eyes of the public over their pushy behavior re: Suicune, the Aether Foundation's reputation was further devastated by an unexpected confession from the so-called "creator" of Silph: Co's Type: Nulls... the secret UB-repellent miracle-Pokemon had originated from the Aether Foundation all along!
To top it all off, the Ultra Beasts' ongoing hunt has converged on the Sevii Islands... right at the Foundation's headquarters!
Good luck covering this one up!
THE SEVII ISLANDS ARE FAR AWAY FROM THE MAINLAND! HOW CAN OUR CHARACTERS GET THERE QUICKLY?
Well, those who spent the month slowly earning the trust of an otherworldly visitor will find that their efforts have paid off...
While most of the Beasts will suddenly beeline for the Islands without warning, those who have been spending time engaging with trainers and their Pokemon will first attempt to convince them to come along for the ride. ... Or, you know. Some of the pushier ones might just grab you and take off. HAVE FUN WITH THAT.
As for more conventional means of travel, characters who don't want to rocket through the sky cradled in a Buzzwole's muscular arms are free to join emergency response teams that are setting off from every port-- their boats are much quicker than taking the ferry or surfing on a Pokemon!
ASIDE FROM THE OBVIOUS CHAOS GOING ON AT THE HQ, WHAT ELSE WILL OUR CHARACTERS FIND WHEN THEY REACH THE ISLANDS?
Even though the chaos is centered around the Foundation building, it's too close for comfort for the islanders. Locals, both human and Pokemon, are getting the hell out of dodge. While you might be tempted to capture some of the fleeing 'mons, no one will have much luck at that-- there's just too much happening at once.
The first concern of the rescue efforts will be to help evacuate those fleeing the scene, getting them onto inflatable rafts and the backs of Surfing Pokemon and carrying them to safety. Many of the evacuees include people in those familiar white uniforms-- not every Aether agent is sticking around, apparently! Better to get some dirty looks (and possibly questioned by Jennies once they reach safer shores) than get themselves and their Pokemon, like, vaporized by a Blacephalon.
WHAT EXACTLY ARE THE ULTRA BEASTS DOING?
As soon as they arrive, the Ultra Beasts will immediately move to attack the building-- clawing at the walls, tearing off doors, breaking windows...
Notably, they do not seem interested in attacking humans at all, UNLESS one attacks first, or tries to get between them and the building. Then it's time for a fight, and they're not holding back.
SO, HOW DO WE GET INSIDE?
First you'll have to get past the grunts guarding the building... even with a bunch of them jumping ship (and who can blame them after all this dirt on the organization came out?), there are still many bent on defending their headquarters... not just from the Ultra Beasts, but from trainers as well.
Those rushing in to help may find the agents turning their attacks into them instead of the Beasts!
MY CHARACTER DOESN'T GIVE A HOOT ABOUT HELPING THE FOUNDATION! TEAM UB FOREVER!!
GOOD NEWS! The Beasts will not only not attack anyone who's helping them out, but they seem actively grateful for the aid! Trainers who bust up on the scene may even find themselves joined by a Beast in battle, standing alongside your Pokemon against any Aether attackers.
WHAT IF MY CHARACTER REALLY IS TRYING TO HELP THEM AND FIGHT OFF THE ULTRA BEASTS?
Maybe some are just well-intentioned volunteers panicking in the heat of moment (crappy affiliation choices aside, it's hard to blame them), and maybe others are actually willing to slap a helping hand in order to stop anyone from getting past the front door... but either way, they don't care, and getting to the root of this mystery means dealing with them first.
DOES THIS MEAN THERE'S A WIN CONDITION?
YOU BET THERE'S A WIN CONDITION!
Here's how it will work.
To fight off the foes blocking the way, FIRST sign up here with your character, the team of Pokemon they brought with them (remember to link to them on your rosters!), and, if applicable, ONE (1) Ultra Buddy to fight alongside them.
Then head over to the AETHER VS. ULTRA thread on the log and comment with your character's strategy to take down the opposing trainers! Each round of enemies (what, you didn't think it was just gonna be those guys at the front door, did you?) will require a minimum number of challengers to get past, at which point the next challenge will be unlocked as characters get further into the base!
If enough characters participate in each round, the day will be saved! ... Or the win condition will be met, at least! Who knows just what they'll find down there...
DO WE HAVE TO THREAD OUT OUR CHALLENGES?
No! The Aether agents will not be NPC'd, and while you are welcome to thread out as much fighting (or lack thereof, if your character is more into the rescue aid side of things!) as you'd like on the rest of the log, all you need to do for the challenges is write a small summary of how your character would defeat the opposing trainer (ie, which Pokemon they'd use, what kind of strategy, etc)-- the same way you would while applying for a badge!
This summary is not required to be long or detailed-- although of course if you're feeling inspired, go nuts!
MY CHARACTER JUST CAN'T BE STOPPED-- CAN WE CHALLENGE ENEMIES EVEN IF THE REQUIREMENTS WERE ALREADY MET TO UNLOCK THE NEXT CHALLENGE?
Of course!
There's no limit to how many characters can help out, or how many Aether agents they can battle! Even if the next round has been unlocked, players can still comment to earlier rounds with their own challenges.
It's worth noting that the Aether agents will get progressively stronger as the challenges are met, so those whose Pokemon are at lower levels may find themselves getting in over their heads once they get past the rookies...
WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR THIS EVENT?
Everything at the Aether Foundation's headquarters takes place ICly over the 30th and 31st of October.
However, because this is a lot to be happening in a short span of time, the OOC runtime of this event will be extending into the first week of November, with the conclusion being posted on November 6th. (The calendar will still be going up at the same time it normally does, and will be reflecting the IC weather and event dates of November!)
This is to make sure that people will have time to fully participate in the event, play on the log, and meet the win conditions without having to rush!
WHAT IF I DON'T WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS?
That's fine! Your character can stay home. Goodness knows they probably have plenty on their plates just from all the other stuff that happened this month!
Maybe they could go help out with all those powerful Pokemon stampeding over in Cerulean instead...
OH YEAH... WHAT'S HAPPENING OVER THERE EXACTLY?
:)
I HAVE OTHER QUESTIONS!
Ask them below! Don't forget to comment to the sign-up thread before making challenges on the log!

HOW WILL POKEMON BE REACTING TO THE ULTRA BEASTS?
The only particularly stand-out behaviors are also ones we've seen before:
Type: Null and Silphally: A Null or its evolution, no matter how easygoing or peaceful normally, will instinctively react like a trained guard dog, getting between the trainer and the Beast and ready to go on the offensive. This doesn’t seem to be something they can be snapped out of by anything but a return to their Pokeball or the Ultra Beast no longer being present. Grookey, Sobble, and Scorbunny: Regardless of their individual personalities, if any of these three mysterious new Pokemon are faced with an Ultra Beast they will respond with sheer terror and piercing wailing, trying to flee or hide by any means necessary.
As the month goes on, the reactions from the wild Pokemon (except for the above five species) will get less extreme, but will never be totally calm. NPCs will be assisting many wild Pokemon who are exhausted or lost, organized by Pokemon Center staff or particularly competent volunteers. but how plausible would it be for Fred to try to booby trap certain areas and/or set up stuff like nets and snares during the chaos, specifically to try to catch Aether foundation people and their Pokemon.
his Pokemon aren't really strong enough to take on more than the first round or so of trainers and he's not really that focused on battling anyway; that said I'm absolutely not expecting him to be allowed to make much of a dent, if his traps work at all. If yall would rather not have him do this I can handwave that the Naganadel hanging around him is keeping him from setting anything up so its nbd

Over the past month, Kazuki had made friends with a bunch of Nihilego. I was wondering if one of two things could happen:
A: (Aka the BIG STRETCH) Would it be possible for a person to "fuse" with a Nihilego ala Lusamine? Totally okay if they can't, esp if you're planning for Lusamine to do it later as a big boss fight or something.
B: If someone has befriended an Ultra Beast or two, could they work with them in the fight?
C: If a character isn't good at battling, is there something else they can do to help in general?
Thanks as always!

Kazuki has been volunteering at the Foundation for a long time and recently he's been connecting some dots after Silph admitted that the Type: Nulls weren't their invention, and learning that the Ultra Beats, Galar starters, and Type: Nulls all seem to know each other. At this point even a dummy like him can see that the common denominator here is the Aether Foundation.
I was wondering if he could get caught while trying to snoop during the commotion? He doesn't have to see or find out anything new, and I don't need a mod to play an npc or anything-- just the permission to say that one of them tried to shut him up. Is that okay?
Sorry for the constant nagging, I just like to err on the side of caution before doing anything that might be going too far.

BeastBuddy (optional): The Naganadel he temporarily caught in a net in a log earlier this month; incidentally, since it may not come up in a thread, I just want the record to show that the Naganadel failed miserably at getting Fred to interpret its gestures as "come with me", so in a fit of frustration it just took one of Fred's own nets, wrapped Fred up in it, and dragged him to Aether like that. Because he's Fred, he immediately understood what this meant and had absolutely no qualms with this.bustin heads
