A Stand is a physical manifestation of someone's fighting spirit. You know Personas? Stands are kind of like that, and in fact predate them. Stands can look like just about anything; some are very humanoid, some are just a little guy (or a colony of them), some look like objects...
Likewise, they can have just about any kind of ability you could think of. Some, especially early on, have simple powers like "punching" or "making fire"; over the years, they've had a tendency to become increasingly specific or esoteric. For instance, there's a stand in Part 6 that allows the user to excavate vivid representations of memories from the earth; one stand from Part 8 essentially turns the entire environment against anybody who pursues its user, making misfortune rain down upon them. All you need to make a stand is an appearance, a power, and preferably some sort of music reference to name it after. This page on the Jojo Wiki contains more in-depth explanations than you'll ever need and provides easy access to many, many examples of stands in all of JJBA! But that's so... highly specific I can't imagine anybody would get any use out of it, pff. Just thought it merited mentioning since the bulk of the physical changes is usually a fourth wall exclusive for these guys.
