Handwritten notes will be readable during fourth walls, but at any other time, they will appear blurry and as if they are stained with water (or coffee). However, if your character is the type to hang onto to notes, they will find they are once again readable during the next fourth wall. So theoretically, if your character is trying to uncover the secrets of this world (good luck), they wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel each time.
