Paldea Event FAQ

There's a big event on the horizon, so pack your bags and print your boarding passes, everyone! We're going to Paldea.

What exactly is happening?

Riegfried and Soy are bringing you all to Paldea! Seems like their Carnival-themed contest back in February was not enough to satisfy their fascination with the region, and rather than keeping the trip between themselves, they're brining you along to experience all Paldea has to offer.

When is this event taking place?

ICly, this event will span two months starting on April 1st, and ending when characters get back home on June 1st.

Where will we be staying? And how will we get there?

Arrangements have been made for characters to stay at Paldea's premier Pokemon school for all-ages, Naranja-Uva Academy! But there's far more than the school or even the surrounding city of Mesagoza to explore. Paldea is your oyster!

Transportation for everyone will also be handled by Soy and Riegfried. They are sparing no expense for this, so flights are booked and pay for however many characters may go! And don't worry about getting to the airport, either, that's what Corviknight taxis are for. Either way, you are getting there.

What are the dorm rooms like?

Dorm rooms are available for one or two persons (the beds are separate though!). The rooms themselves are fairly basic, but include a small kitchen, a sleeping area (obviously) and a small study nook. There will be a room available for each character, though you can decide if they are taking a single or sharing a room with another character.

That said, characters don't have to stay in the dorms. They are an option, but if your character desires more luxury or is travelling and far away from the dorm, they can also find a room in town. Of course, Riegfried and Soy, though they are generous, won't be paying for this. If you'd like more than the dorms, you've got to hustle for it!

What about getting around once we're there?

When it comes to the cities and towns of Paldea, everyone will have access to warps from the get-go! This will make traveling the region and seeing all it has to offer you a much more realistic goal. But as for anywhere else, you'll need to make your way by foot, or by Pokemon. It's also possible to rent transport like bikes in the major cities, though the grassy areas might not make the best biking trail.

There aren't the travel times for Paldea on the locations page.

That is intentional, as the open world style makes it very difficult to assign those numbers, especially for a two month event. We ask you to just use your discretion. Exploring all of any one Area in a Province, for example, obviously cannot be done in a single day, and point A to point B travel without stopping to see the sights will take less time than if you're checking things out along the way.

And this or that place in Paldea that isn't listed?

There are certain places, such as the small town of Zapapico, that have been kept off the map. They do still exist in our Paldea! We left these locations off the map for the sake of time, and to keep the locations page from getting too busy, but they can be visited all the same.

In the games, you can find items on the ground around Paldea! Can our characters do that?

Yes, with the exception of TMs! Things such as berries, healing items, and other things can be found like in the games. We just ask you to be reasonable with how much your character finds. You can check sites like Bulbapedia or Serebi to know exactly what items are able to be discovered in a certain area. This, for example, lists the items that can be found in South Area One in the game, so it would be fine for your characters to find one of those items.

What about Terastalizing?

Good question!

For those unfamiliar, in the Paldea region, a strange phenomenon occurs called Terastalization. When exposed to a Tera Orb, a Terastalized Pokemon's body will look like it is made of crystal while a large gem appears above it. During this transformation, its type is changed to its Tera Type, which can hugely affect how it functions in battle!

It's a phenomenon that still requires much research on why and how it occurs.

And you are going to get to experience it!

My Pokemon? Terastalizing?

It is more likely than you think!

When arriving, every character will receive a Tera Orb. With this orb they will be able to terastalize their pokemon.

Much like mega-evolution (which many of you might be more familiar with), your character can only terastalize one pokemon at a time and the transformation will last until that pokemon exits battle or gets knocked out. After that, your orb will need to recharge, which can either happen at a pokemon center or will slowly occur over time.

Can all pokemon terastalize?

Yes! While in the Paldea Region, every pokemon, both the ones you own and the ones you might encounter or catch, will have a Tera Type.

How do you determine what your Pokemon's Tera Type may be?

Generally speaking, a Pokemon's tera type matches one of their normal types. A Charcadet will always have a Fire Tera Type. It is possible for a pokemon to have a Tera Type that doesn't match its normal types, but these special Tera Pokémon are difficult to catch.

For your own pokemon, if you are interested in giving them their Tera Type, we'll make this ruling -- for the most part, your pokemon will have a Tera Type that is normal for its species i.e. one that matches its type. We will allow you to have one pokemon you already own with a special Tera Type. You can decide which pokemon that is and what its Tera Type is. We hope that is a nice compromise between wanting to give people the ability to get into the Tera Type strategies, while also holding true to what is canon to the game.

All of this sounds very confusing!

We agree, it does. It's a lot! Gamefreak loves dumping new little mechanics on us all.

Interacting with your Pokemon's Tera Types, terastalizing, and everything are completely optional. If reading this made your eyes cross, feel free to ignore Tera Types while in Paldea. We bring it up for those people that love to devise battle strategies and might be going after the badges while here, as the gym leaders will use terastalization.

Can my pokemon still terastalize back home if I steal a Tera Orb?

Absolutely not! Again, the phenomenon is still very poorly understood, but for whatever reason, it seems to be very location dependent. Pokemon in Paldea can terastalize, but even when exposed to a Tera Orb, outside of this region, it just doesn't work. It's very strange. Perhaps future scientists will understand the phenomenon more and somehow manage to bring it to the rest of the pokemon world, but for now, you'll just have to make do with Mega-evolution!

So, what is this about school assignments?

The School Assignments will be an optional thing your character can participate in during these two months. The Academy wants to give folks a taste of how daily life is like for their students, so both the faculty, as well as the various heads of the school clubs have put their heads together and come up with a wide variety of assignments that not only help your character explore Paldea, but also gives them an understanding of what that particular subject/club wants to teach and you get a reward.

Sounds a little complicated, but a quick example would be 'The Pokemon Battle club wants to see you obtain a badge in the Paldea pokemon league. If you do this, they will reward you with a TM'.

We've tried to come up with various assignments, for both people interested in battling and those that are not. Again, doing these assignments are completely optional, it's just a way of giving you guys a bit more structure in exploring Paldea, as well as rewarding you when you do!

The assignments can be found here, and each assignment will tell you what, if any, requirements there are to obtain the reward.

Oh! And important to note is that we will be adding some more assignments when people are more settled. So if there isn't anything that catches your fancy right now, there might be in a week or two.

My character wouldn't want to go!

Well, Paldea does have a lot to offer. The cities around the region include hubs of fashion, technology, cuisine, and the arts. There truly is something for everyone!

But if that on top of visiting a region that no character in the game has ever had the chance to see before wouldn't entice them, perhaps they wouldn't want to be left behind for two months while others are traveling. Maybe those others would even insist they come along, or one of their Pokemon would.

Or hey, maybe your character doesn't want to pass up the opportunity for a vacation where a place to stay and food there are free for them. Soy and Riegfried are paying for all of that, after all!

Can I, as a player, opt out of this event all-together?

Technically speaking, yes! Your characters can stay behind for those two months, but to be totally transparent, there won't be events (including swarms and other calendar staples) during that month, nor will obtaining badges, etc. be available. We on the mod team will be keeping busy with Paldea, after all! Of course, check-in AC will still be available to all, so activity is not a concern for those who don't wish to participate.

If badges aren't being approved for the duration, are there just no gym battles?

You will still be able to participate in battles and earn badges at the eight gyms in Paldea! There will be both Standard and Elite Teams you can choose to take on. While thes wins will not count towards allowing you to challenge the Elite Four in Kanto, nor will the Paldean Elite Four be available to challenge, beating a gym there won't be without reward. In addition to your badge, a win will earn you money, TMs, and in some cases more, like the ability to use Surf and Fly out of battle.

Hey, wait, isn't this around the time we usually hear about Prom?

It sure is! And that is because this year Prom will be happening in beautiful Paldea! Though in a slightly... different way than normal.

How will it be different exactly?

Well, historically, Prom has always taken place in April! However, Riegfried and Soy didn't want you worrying about prom dresses and suits while you were still exploring Paldea, so the event has been pushed back a bit. About a month, in fact.

So this year, Prom is happening at the end of May!

Wait a minute! Isn't that when the Fourth Wall is? Are we not having one this time?

Oh no. We are having a Fourth Wall. And we are having a Prom. We are having a Prom at the Fourth Wall, and this year, all your friends can come!

Have you ever wanted to invite someone to prom but they are, very rudely, not in this world? This year, you don't need to worry about that. This year, anyone from anywhere can drop in during the Fourth Wall and attended the (in)famous Victory Road Prom.

Don't worry, if one of your friends decides to come, The Powers That Be (presumably Arceus) will make sure they are appropriately dressed!

What about all the rest that normally happens during the Fourth Wall?

You mean the return of powers, weird warping, and other reality bending business? That's still happening. Just this time, we are all in Paldea while that happens. And also, there is a prom to attend.

What exactly is Prom?

Prom is a reoccurring, yearly event where everybody and their Pokemon get to go PARTY HARD in sweet sweet formalwear and generally have a good time. We’re talkin’ music, dancing, big ol’ buffet tables, all that good stuff.

Sounds fun! So why has this made half of everybody suddenly nervous?

Well, you see, in recent years, Prom has had a bit of a tendency of... going off the rails.

It's (mostly) never the fault of the otherworlder guests (except that one time it was), but for some reason, when everybody gathers together, it just attracts trouble. Sometimes it is Team Rocket, sometimes it's extra-dimensional invasions. Honestly, it's a miracle anyone still wants to organise this stuff!

I'm newer to the game and have never attended a prom before! What's it like?

It’s a big party event serving as an excuse for characters to all get together in the same place. Even more important, it's a fun excuse to pick fancy outfits your characters might otherwise never wear. And if things go wrong (but listen, at some point it has to go right, right?) there will be a lot of action-packed adventure too.

If you are curious, you can check out some of our previous prom events to get a feel for what sort of thing might (or might not) go down.

Are we expected to dress up?

For Prom itself, while nobody will stop your character if they show up wearing their regular duds... they'll look very out of place. Prom has traditionally been a chance to go wild and dress up to the nines, and most characters throw themselves at that opportunity with relish.

Alright, so Prom is covered. But what if someone wants to app a character in during this event?

Anyone, new to the game or not, is entirely welcome to do that! Incoming characters during the trip will arrive in Paldea instead of in New Bark Town. Specifically, newcomers will wake up in a dorm room in Naranja-Uva Academy. Riegfried and Soy will be ready to greet anyone with the usual supplies and a starter pokemon's pokeball. It's just like Mom, but with added flair!

There is something else I’d like to ask!

Feel free! That’s what this post is for. If you put your question down below, we’ll try and get to it ASAP, so you can get plotting for your character.

I'm guessing the answer is no, but--

Rymes' battle is a Double Battle in-game. Is it still one here, or nah, Single for simplicity.

I do like to ask if it is totally normal for the characters to just not Terastalize on their Pokémon during gym battles and fight the Paldean gym leaders like normal head on.

I remember that the gym leaders have at least one Pokémon that is not of the type they specialize in so I would be interested in coming up with clever ideas of handling the Paldean gym battles if, let’s say, Harry wants to challenge Iono during the trip and he has to fight that Misamagius of hers at some point but he didn’t brought his Tera Orb at all.

Several questions!

1. What about characters with businesses? Radley is interested, but concerned to leave his business for so long. Characters can't, say, fly back now and then (in a plane or on a Pokemon) to check on things at home, can they? Naturally Radley wouldn't expect their hosts to pay for that.

2. I'm assuming characters can only bring six Pokemon and then switch them around via PC so they can all eventually see Paldea?

3. Does "all your friends" for Prom mean the players' friends or the characters' friends? I.E., will the ban on players playing characters close to the characters in-game be lifted as long as they don't display RPing with themselves? Can it be said in the narrative that they were together as long as it's not RPed out?

Pursuant to #3...

Is it OK to have that [kinda handwaved] interaction mention that the not-in-game character has brought up something that, for them, has happened already [due to timeline differences], but for the in-game character, it's a [possible for them, because it hasn't yet happened, and could still be averted] future?

Asking for a friend... o.o

1. Are the crystal formations that indicate raids in-game present throughout Paldea, whether they actually do anything or not?

2. Beyond the items/TMs received with badges or from assignments, is there anything noteworthy that might be available in stores in Paldea but not in Johto/Kanto, or vice versa?

3. Is anyone going to warn those poor visitors about Casseroya Lake's Most Delightful Veluza, or are the locals going to point and laugh at their misery?

Cecil's freshly canon-updated self will most certainly not have a heart attack upon seeing all those lovely free-range crystals lying around! He'll be fine!! >:3

I honestly can't recall if I asked about it back then or if someone else asked first, but thank you for the juicy info! Good thing the herbs are limited, too, because otherwise Cecil might go a tiny little bit overboard...

Are the uh. The stakes for the Treasures of Ruin kicking around? Ryou actually has enough sense in him to not pull the stakes or anything, but can they be found?

Thanks mods!

Given the information here right now, is it safe to assume that anyone who was hoping to evolve a pokemon with specific items is gonna have to wait to get back home?

For example, in Kanto and Johto you could buy stuff like Peat Blocks from the department stores; but given that it would be really intense to expect a shopping directory, I can't imagine we can do that uh. Here.

(That aside, will items like that potentially be assignment rewards?)

Just to double check -- can pokemon still mega-evolve while we are here in Paldea, or does whatever make Terastalizing happen interfere?
epitaffio: (*notices your phone* OwO what's this?)

I'm going to assume the answer is "nah but feel free to be creative," but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask - did Rockets get any instructions in particular, or is there otherwise anything Team Rocket might be interested in investigating?

DOPPIO'S PROBABLY GONNA BE LOOKING INTO LOCAL LEGENDS ANYWAY BUT. Like I said, thought I might as well ask!

Thanks for the quick answer! c: Doppio can probably get by with his independent efforts, but I'd never say no to more crime either, so I'll defer to the other rockets here.

With warps will characters be able to warp from one town to any other town? For example, Cortondo to Montenevera. Or is there still some kind of order like in Kanto and Johto?

Also, a second question! What are the levels for Pokémon in the different areas? Or should we look at what they are in Scarlet/Violet and base them on that?

I'm BACK with a new question!

For special evolutions based on locations- specifically in this case, looking at Galarian Yamask- would any of the ruins in Paldea work out for those purposes? Normally it only works at the Ruins of Alph.

For the fourth wall -- It has been established that pictures/video footage is corrupted/glitched after the even. What about just handwritten notes characters might have taken during the event as they try to uncover the secrets of this world (unsuccessfully) using their abilities like using dispel magic or detect magic?
soupguy: (foraging)

[personal profile] soupguy 2024-05-23 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
If a character visiting on fourth wall gives a character in-game a gift - like a flower, rock, or similar common/free thing that originated in the VR world - will that item stay in-tact after the event? Since in some cases it seems likely to happen, I wanted to check after seeing the question about written notes taken during fourth wall.

For what it's worth, this wouldn't be used to try and make memories of fourth wall events clearer or anything. It is just for sentiment and either a yes or no can still be sentimental. In other words, I'm just asking to be safe and prevent needing to rework expectations after the fact.

Another fourth wall question!

The other post says "Characters also may not keep Pokemon that were given to them by visiting characters--"

Say a fourth wall guest thought to help with stealing for Team Rocket. Would those Pokémon also vanish after the event and if so, would there be some kind of punishment for the Rocket that submitted those stolen Pokémon?
