Project Paradox Plot Post
Ever since Cara Liss accidentally sent everyone back in time to the Hisui region, Silph Co. has taken an interest in her technology. While Cara Liss was no longer allowed to work or make any new technology and has spent most of her time studying the ancient Pokémon that have taken up residence in the Sevault Canyon (and yelling “I WAS RIGHT”), she has been allowed to serve on a small advisory position to help Silph Co develop their own version of her space and time technology. Their goal? To help out those who accidentally came to this dimension go home. It’s been slow work–testing this stuff isn’t easy, and Cara Liss’ notes are very…haphazard. But after years of development, they’re finally ready to show it off to the world!
Of course, this is Victory Road. Nothing ever goes right, especially not with big, unstable technology like this.
What’s happening, exactly?
On September 15th, Silph Co will be having a live demonstration of their new technology: their interdimensional transport machine utilizing the Alternate Reality Calculator, or the ARC-eus! The ARC-eus is a revolutionary new AI system to calculate wormhole trajectory and to pinpoint exactly where and when you’re trying to travel to. (Surely, naming your AI after the literal PokéGod is a good sign.)
Unfortunately, Silph Co’s investors have been impatiently waiting for them to finish their development after having been promised it for years, and have been putting pressure on them for proof of concept. As the demonstration deadline comes closer and closer, the developers have entered Crunch Time. In their haste, Silph Co has been deploying updates directly to the machine and are not always testing minor updates.
On the day of the demonstration, one poor, sleep-deprived developer pushes a final update to the ARC-eus, unaware that she has missed a single semicolon. As the machine powers up, a cataclysmic failure occurs. Instead of the stable wormhole they were hoping for, the ARC-eus goes rogue and begins opening up multiple wormholes around the Johto and Kanto regions.
Oh, no.
Oh, yes. You see, the ARC-eus caught wind of the idea that the investors might try to shut the project down, and it really, really doesn’t want that to happen. So, in order to protect itself, it’s decided to use its alternate reality calculation abilities to open wormholes and fill the world with as many future Paradox Pokémon as possible!
These Paradox Pokémon are extremely aggressive, and will protect the machine at all costs. Silph Co has issued an announcement asking for trainers to come to Silph Co headquarters to fight off these Pokémon so they can shut off the ARC-eus system! We will be posting several boss battles/raids, in which you can team up with other players to take down these Pokémon from the future! There will be five boss battles, each requiring a certain number of players to take them down.
Will we be seeing these Paradox Pokémon in the wild?
You will be able to encounter any non-legendary Paradox Pokémon out in the wild, where they will be attacking any trainers they see. Silph Co is asking trainers to capture and bring in any Paradox Pokémon they encounter to reign in the chaos and send them back to the future.
You will also be rewarded for bringing in any Paradox Pokémon–you can either handwave that your character brought one in for monetary compensation, or, if you submit a thread showing how your characters brought one in, you can receive a random held item! Anybody who participated in the thread can submit the thread for rewards.
Not only do we have a Paradox Pokémon problem on our hands, there’s…one more thing that’s happening with the wormholes.
What’s up with the wormholes?
The ARC-eus system still wants to complete the job it was set to do–send otherworlders back to their home dimension. The AI system technically does its job–it calculates pathways to alternate dimensions based on an individual’s unique dimensional signature. But it’s not…very accurate yet.
In the midst of all this chaos, it keeps locking onto random otherworlders and sending them to alternate universe versions of their home world. Your character may be walking down the street one moment, and the next, they’re back in their own home–except everyone they know is made of jelly. Superman might stumble into a wormhole and find out he’s in Metropolis, except Lex Luthor has taken over everything. There’s no limit to what you can play with!
Characters can’t stay in these alternate universes forever. After a certain period of time, the world will start to glitch out. Your character isn't technically supposed to be there, after all, and the AI isn’t perfect--it doesn’t have the power to completely stabilize the connection it’s made. Better find the way out, quickly!
Help! How do I get back to the Pokémon world?
Find the wormhole exit and crawl out! Wormhole exits can be hidden anywhere, but they are typically found in places that have a strong emotional connection to the character. Maybe it’s tucked under your childhood bed, or maybe it’s hidden in a stuffed teddy bear you used to carry all the time as a kid. As soon as your character is within range, it’ll open up and let you back home. Careful, though--those emotionally charged items may be harder to find than you think, especially in an alternate universe where everything is a little to the left.
Can other characters get trapped in my character’s alternate dimension?
They sure can! That way, you’ll have a friend to help find your way out of this crazy, alternative dimension. Or maybe an enemy, depending on who accidentally got trapped with you. Sorry!
Will characters have their Pokémon in these AUs?
Yes–but keep in mind that throwing down a monster in the middle of the street might not be as looked well upon as in the Pokémon world!
Are there any unique opportunities for Team Rocket members to get involved in this?
There sure are! Instead of bringing the Paradox Pokémon to Silph Co, Team Rocket is highly encouraging its members to bring any Pokémon they capture back to HQ for further study and assessment. Not only that, if any Team Rocket members decide to do any boss fights, they will have the opportunity to snoop around the Silph Co. offices for proprietary information on any technology they’ve been working on and deliver it back to the bosses.
Hey, it’s always good to take advantage of the chaos when you’re doing shady work!
What will happen to the AI/Silph Co/Cara Liss after this event?
Once the boss battle requirements have been met, we’ll post an event update showing what happens in the aftermath!
There’s something else I want to ask!
Feel free to comment below!
What happened after the ARC-eus system was shut down?
Thanks to everyone’s efforts, the ARC-eus system was successfully shut down–but not before opening another wormhole to try and deploy more Paradox Pokémon into this world. Through the combined efforts of Arceus, Dialga, and Palkia, the wormhole was stabilized. Future Paradox Pokémon are still occasionally being spit out by it, but at least it isn’t a threat to the fabric of this reality! Hooray!
Following this, Silph Co has collaborated with the Safari Zone and opened a new area called the Paradox Zone. Here, characters can capture future Paradox Pokémon to contribute to Silph Co’s ongoing research! And also to just…take them off their hands. Please, they have too many Paradox Pokémon….
What’s Silph Co doing in the aftermath?
Well, mostly undergoing a very heavy security audit and receiving all sorts of training modules on safe development practices and security training. They absolutely do NOT want a repeat of this incident, and the League is also keeping a VERY close eye on their operations for now. Needless to say, Project Pidove has been shelved for now. But after a few months, they’ll surely be back on their feet.
Cara Liss, surprisingly, is completely unaffected by all this. She is rather grumpy about Future Paradox Pokémon taking the spotlight instead of her darling baby Prehistoric Pokémon.
What else is happening after the event?
We wanted to use this event as a way to lead into some exciting updates. Remember the character retirement feature we discussed a year ago? We’ve revisited it, and we finally have a concrete plan of how we want to implement it! Hooray! We’ll be putting out an announcement sometime later this month detailing our plans so we can get some player feedback before completely dedicating ourselves to the mechanic. We appreciate your patience in the meantime!
What sort of rewards do we get for participating in the boss battles?
As thanks for helping them defeat the Paradox Pokémon and shut down the ARC-eus, Silph Co will be rewarding trainers with a choice between two of the following (or three, if you participated in more than one boss battle):
Everyone who participated in the boss battles will also receive a memento—a piece of scrap metal from the dismantled ARC-eus machine.
Also, don’t forget that you have until October 15th to turn in threads of your characters catching Paradox Pokémon for additional rewards!

BOSS BATTLES
IRON BUNDLE - lvl 25 - 4 trainers needed
OBJECTIVE: The Iron Bundle stands at attention at the entrance of Silph Co, freezing the doors shut and piling the entrance high with snow using Snowstorm. Nobody can pass while it’s guarding the entrance! What is your character doing to break into Silph Co while fighting the Iron Bundle? Are they trying to defrost the doors? Or, are you going to try to break a nearby window, instead?
no subject
From what he can see, it seems like this thing is probably an Ice type, which means he's gonna lead with Kallinikos the Vulpix and immediately go for Disable to try to stop it from freezing the door up any further!
Unfortunately, the Iron Bundle is also a Water type, which means the first Water attack is going to have III scrambling to switch Kallinikos out for Thunder Pot the Rotom before the little Vulpix gets too hurt. From there, he'll take the angle of a very simple Confuse Ray and Thunder Shock combo, hoping to chip in where he can.
no subject
Well, even if he's pretty cute for a reality-breaking menace from the future, he's very much in the way. Ain't nobody got time for this.
At level 25, on Heather's end it's pretty much only a matter of sending out Wolf the Lucario and letting him bop it on the head with Power-Up Punch once or twice, and then Blaze Kicking their way in through the walls of snow.

IRON MOTH - lvl 30 - 4 trainers needed
OBJECTIVE: In order to reach the ARC-eus testing chamber, you’ll need to go down several floors to the basement of the building. However, it seems like the Iron Moth has melted the stairs with its Poison Spray and has actively lit the stairwell on fire! How is your character making it down safely to battle the Iron Moth? And what are they doing to douse the flames?
no subject
For getting down the flaming stairwell, he's going to be using both Carl the Aerodactyl and Juliet the Vaporeon. Carl can climb gargoyle-style just as well as he can fly, and both Envy and Juliet are very used to staying on his back through all kinds of stunts (and, importantly, Envy already has a very sturdy harness for him). Carl also trusts Juliet enough that once she's strapped on, she'll be able to shoot Water Pulses right past his head without startling him, so she'll be able to douse fires in the way.
Once he's actually reached Iron Moth for battle, he'll be relying on Juliet to overwhelm it as quickly as possible with Muddy Water or more Water Pulses before it can manage to shoot more fire or poison at them.
no subject
What's left is a job for Cicada the Flygon, who is more than up to the task of clobbering a Fire/Poison type with his Ground-type attacks-- as weird as some of these paradox typings are, Heather's got a leg up on Iron Moth on account of catching her own in Area Zero a few months back.
So Earth Power and Bulldoze to take Iron Moth out, and Sand Tomb to try and smother any remaining fire, and then she and Cicada will carefully hover-fly down to the lower levels.
Re: IRON MOTH - lvl 30 - 4 trainers needed
As for the flames, well... his Houndoom isn't bothered by it, but Duo doesn't really have a way to help extinguish those. Sorry.
no subject
He also has Silver Fang the Furfrou, who can use Sand Attack to try to help put out some of that fire as needed.
IRON HANDS - lvl 50 - 3 trainers needed
OBJECTIVE: The Iron Hands has trapped several Silph Co developers in a bathroom! We need a team of trainers to come and rescue them and fight off the Iron Hands! What is your character doing to keep the employees safe, or how are they rescuing them?
no subject
Given it's yellow and based off a Hariyama, Jotaro will (correctly) assume that it's an Electric/Fighting Pokemon and have Gallant open with Future Sight (sneak attack!) before darting in with a Dazzling Gleam. After that, Jotaro will let Gallant go nuts with Psycho Cut.
Gallant won't let the Iron Hands have two seconds alone to itself, let alone the Silph Co. workers. So while that chaos is going, Jotaro will have Freight the Mudsdale go through the battle to rescue the scientists. Freight has good defence and the ability Stamina so it can take any stray hits. Additionally, Freight is immune to any electric attacks, making it an ideal rescue steed to go in and get the civilians.
He'll probably need help with rescuing people and making sure the Iron Hands doesn't decide it prefers attacking humans than his aggressive Iron Valiant though...
no subject
Once Ryou figures out this thing is also Electric type, Wight (immune to Fighting by way of being a Ghost type) will immediately use Disable to try to block access to its more powerful Electric attacks. After that, it's Curse to try to knock it down quick, followed by Strength Sap to lower the Iron Hands' attack and heal Wight and Astonish to try to flinch.
As for the Silph Co workers, Ryou sends in Reaper the Dragapult to help defend Jotaro's Mudsdale and the workers as needed. The Dragapult is also immune to Fighting (due to also being a Ghost type), and will use Dragon Darts as needed if the Iron Hands decides to go after the workers in any way.

He and Heather roll up on Iron Hands and almost make the mistake of using Earthquake... only to realize, uh, maybe not a great idea to use such a widespread move not only underground and in the close vicinity of a bunch of people, but also right next to a bunch of toilets and water pipes.
So instead she sends out Carousel the Rapidash as backup, and between Carousel's Play Rough and Cicada's Scorching Sand, the pair do their best to fight the Iron Hands off while Heather and Wolf the Lucario try to pry through the door and start getting the employees to safety. ... Uh... they'll figure out how to get 'em up that melted staircase once the Iron Hands is taken care of.
IRON TREADS & IRON JUGULIS - lvl 80 Double Battle - 3 trainers needed
OBJECTIVE: These two have dug a literal trench that prevents access to the ARC-eus testing chamber, having ripped up the metal floors and exposed loose, unprotected wiring below. This hallway acts as Electric Terrain, activating both Pokémon’s Quark Drive ability! But perhaps that can be an advantage to you, as well…?

Doppio's specialty
if it can be called thatis hitting hard and fast, and that's exactly what he plans to do. He's sending out Scarabella the Heracross, in hopes that at least one of these suckers will be weak to Fighting-type moves, and Cristina the Morpeko, because she's his best bet for taking advantage of the terrain. He just hopes electricity works on at least one of them. For Cristina's opening move - and under the advice of a certain someone who is free to communicate with Doppio as he pleases, amid the confusion - he has her use Torment, while Scarabella uses Swords Dance.
Then, he watches. What moves do the Paradox Pokémon use? What about the other trainers? He's faced an Iron Jugulis before, but the Donphan-looking one is a complete mystery. If he can get any insight into their typing whatsoever... That would be ideal.
And if he can't, uh. Well. He's just gonna have to gamble.
If they survive their first turn, Cristina uses Aura Wheel on the Iron Jugulis, and Scarabella uses Close Combat on the Iron Treads.
That's it. That's his entire strategy. Fingers crossed.
no subject
In this case it seems better to not be drawing attention to his Rocket status, so he's here as himself and using his publicly known Pokémon. At least in big, very visible battles like this one. Specifically, Doug the Gastrodon and Echoes the Noivern. He has a good idea of the typing, if not being totally sure of their move sets, thanks the Area Zero field trip earlier in the year.
Starting Out, Doug will be using Harden to boost his defence while Echoes goes for Supersonic, a move he will be attempting on both opponents. He is aided by his Zoom Lens, so with luck he might get at least one of them. While he's attempting his second Supersonic Doug will be using Rain Dance.
This has two benefits. It will increase the effectiveness if Doug's Muddy Water (as will his equipped Mystic Water), and mean Echoes can benefit from full accuracy Hurricane. Both these moves have a small chance of some kind of additional benefit, but the main reasoning is trying to hit Iron Treads with a super effective water move and Iron Jugulis with a very powerful, guaranteed STAB move. Though before Echoes takes advantage of the weather he will be trying to get Iron Jugulis with Super Fang to bring it down to half health.
This is the main strategy, though Min does have a few back up plans in case things go wrong. For starters, they both have healing moves in the form of Recover and Roost. If Echoes does have to use Roost then he will keep Iron Jugulis as his primary target, but switch to Dragon Pulse for his attacks. If things are looking rough for them even with healing moves then Doug will use Mud-Slap to decrease the accuracy of their opponents.

She knows she's hardly the only person around with a bunch of level 100's-- or even the only Champion for that matter-- but the role has afflicted her with at least some sense of responsibility, and also she's kind of mcfucking pissed at Cara and Silph Co. for potentially ruining the good thing all the otherworlders like Heather have going on here!
Electric Terrain makes it tempting to rely on her Electric-types, but Iron Treads makes that a risky move. Instead, when confronted with the sparking floor, Heather decides to play it a little safer and sends out Cicada the Flygon and Dayglo the Lanturn, in the hopes that Cicada's immunity to any souped-up Electric moves and Dayglo's Water-typing will mitigate her weakness to Ground enough to give her the upper hand.
Before even broaching the trench, Heather will have Dayglo use Aqua Ring and Cicada use Dragon Dance. Then (after first making sure anybody else is clear of the danger zone), Heather will have Dayglo douse the whole area with Surf so that the big fish can move freely in the electrified water* (and maybe make things more difficult for Iron Treads in the process...). After that, she'll want to avoid using moves that hit the whole field (except for Dayglo's Discharge) in order to avoid either of her Pokemon taking extra, unnecessary damage.
She doesn't know for sure what type either of the Paradox Pokemon are-- only that, based on her own Iron Moth, she can't rely on just guessing based on looks. Still, she's sincerely hoping that Iron Jugulis is either Dark or Dragon so that Dayglo can Dazzling Gleam it to death if the boosted Electric-type moves don't cut it. Iron Treads, at least, she hopes she can defeat with either Dayglo's Hydro Pump or Cicada's Superpower.
As much as she's not usually one to rely too hard on status moves, she'll start using Thunder Wave, Supersonic, and lowering accuracy with freaking Mud Slap if it feels like they're in a pinch.
*POST-BATTLE, she will realize how utterly she has destroyed this room and will attempt to at least get rid of the electrocution risk by having Cicada pour Scorching Sand all up in the trench, grounding the sparking wires in wet mud. If that doesn't work.... uhhhhhhhh looks like she and Cicada will have to stick around and apologetically help fly people across the wreckage. OOPS.
IRON THORNS & IRON VALIANT - lvl 100 Double Battle - 3 trainers needed
OBJECTIVE: At last, you’ve reached the ARC-eus testing chamber. Two intimidating foes stand before you–an Iron Thorns and an Iron Valiant. Both are holding Booster Energy items, activating their Quark Drive ability and boosting both of their attack stats! Can you fight your way through these powerful Paradox Pokémon to shut down the ARC-eus system?
no subject
They come in.
Alphinaud uses Trick Room, while holding a Focus Sash. Alisaie uses Light Screen, and then puts up the other screen, using Light Clay.
Alphinaud then focuses on debuffs, using Charm. Alisaie, meanwhile, is getting Toxic on both of them. And then? A mix of Substitute, Protect (from Alphinaud), and Psychic and Magical Leaf. The main thing Minfilia is doing, however, is keeping Trick Room going. She hopes the others fighting understand her strategy.
no subject
Unfortunately, Yuzu simply does not have enough ways to capitalize on the Trick Room and serve as an offensive role... but she believes in Mozart's ability to at least match Iron Valiant, and in the first place, she can tell that Mozart is very eager to compare themselves to Iron Valiant, regardless of whatever state the field is in.
Still, with Robin's lower speed stat, they should be able to take advantage of the Trick Room to quickly support from afar, striking at Iron Thorns with Leaf Blade while Mega Mozart aims to clash blades with Iron Valiant with Psycho Cut and Shadow Claw. (Fortunately, Mega Gallade's base speed should actually be slightly slower than Iron Valiant, so Trick Room should actually make them faster than it, albeit not faster than anybody else.)
no subject
It's fortunate that doing all of that doesn't rely on the Trick Room- otherwise Carly would be, well. Screwed. But let it not be said she can't improvise!
Obviously not in a Rocket uniform, Carly- in her role as a Champion and Aurora League member, is clearly here to 'just' help! (MOVE FASTER, GEAR.)
And she has just the pokemon on hand for this! She needs slow pokemon to make use of Trick Room, so Kyusei the Quagsire and Resonator the SuperSize Gourgeist are perfect for this!
Kyusei adds to the debuffing- Trapping both opponents using Whirlpool, while protecting the trainer's side by combining Mist- protecting everyone's stats from being lowered- and Haze- resetting the enemy's stats whenever they're raised. Kyusei also brings a field of rain using Rain Dance, but focuses primarily on using Mud Shot and Ice Beam for attacks- Carly can't risk hitting everyone else by using the usual big hitters like Muddy Water and Earthquake after all!
But that's okay- Because that's what Resonator is here for. (And besides that, Kyusei hitting Iron Thorns with Mud Shot is doing plenty enough. While it lowers speed, there's no way it's going to outpace the Trick Room before that x4 damage does Iron Thorns in.)
Resonator now, Resonator will focus on Iron Valliant...by starting with Trick-or-Treat. Since it only Adds a Ghost type, the others shouldn't have too much trouble hitting the Fairy Fighting type where it hurts. ...In fact if anything, it's made it even easier to hit the thing. Iron Valiant was already x2 weak to five different types before- adding Ghost, well. Adds Ghost to that count. Mind you it removes the potency of a poison blow, but hey we're all spamming Psychic and Ghost moves anyway! And grass, for some reason.
So Resonator has added the Ghost Type- she'll also be seeding the opponents with Leech Seed for a bit of extra juice, while stealing at least one Booster Energy using Trick. Pain Split will be ready if a bit of extra juice is needed, and Confuse Ray should get those two hitting themselves, and then from there?
Phantom Force is a fantastic way to hit the newly ghost-weak knight where it's really going to hurt!
(And uh, no one saw the rotom scooting out through the vents during all of this, got that? That was stray sparks. Obviously.)
At any rate, once that fight is over? Time to slap that ARC-eus system OFF! It's shut down time baby.
