SUMMER SCAVENGER HUNT

It’s almost officially summer, and what better time to go out and hit the routes to explore and discover new things in the regions? At least, that’s what Nephelis, the patron legendary of the otherworlders thinks! It may have been a little bit shy after its time spent in Rocket "care", but it's still around, and it's still very interested in the humans it's collected from other universes. And after the scare on the islands with other otherworlders...the big cat is feeling especially like not only paying attention to its clearly superior and much better behaved “charges”, but also in making sure that they get to enjoy this world and know that they’re much more welcome in it than the strange jellyfish beasts had been. Yes, it's time at last to reach out.

BUT HOW?

Nephelis thought long and hard over what sort of thing humans would like... well, they sure do seem to love collecting interesting Pokemon. And not even collecting, but even just seeing interesting Pokemon, if the way those "Legend Seeker" fellows keep growing in popularity is any indication. Buuut... being a Pokemon itself, Nephelis honestly doesn't really see what the big deal is there. Personally, it's always found humans themselves far more fascinating, whether they come from other worlds or not... it's a big deal when a species of Pokemon has more than one form, but each human is even more different than a Spinda. ... Hey! That's it!

On June 6th, everybody will wake up to find a small, somewhat messily bound booklet placed somewhere obvious nearby. There are five pages inside, the first being a written message, signed with a pawprint:

GREETINGS HUMAN FROM BEYOND THIS WORLD !

I AM NEPHELIS !

I WATCH OVER ALL WHO ARRIVE HERE FROM WORLDS OTHER THAN THIS !

( ALL HUMANS THAT IS ! )

( THE CREATURE BEASTS TWO MONTHS AGO WERE NOT MY DOING ! JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW ! )

SUMMER TIME IS UPON US AND I HAVE OBSERVED THAT HUMANS ENJOY ADVENTURING DURING SUMMER THE MOST !

IF YOU, HUMAN FROM BEYOND THIS WORLD, PLAN ON ADVENTURING, PLEASE CONSIDER KEEPING YOUR EYES " PEELED " FOR THESE VERY INTERESTING OTHER HUMANS ( SEE THE ENCLOSED LIST ! ) I HAVE OBSERVED IN MY OWN TRAVELS !

PLEASE PLACE A STICKER ( ALSO ENCLOSED ! ) NEXT TO THE LIST ENTRY OF EACH UNIQUE HUMAN YOU ENCOUNTER !

I HAVE ALSO OBSERVED THAT HUMANS ENJOY PRIZES, SO THE MORE YOU FIND, THE GREATER THE REWARD YOU REAP AT THE END OF THE SUMMER SHALL BE ! BUT KNOW THAT THE TRUE " PRIZE " WILL BE THE KNOWLEDGE YOU GAIN AND PERHAPS EVEN THE FRIENDS YOU MAKE ALONG THE WAY !

NEPHELIS

POST SCRIPT:

( I HAVE ALSO OBSERVED THAT HUMANS ENJOY " SNACKS " AND THAT THESE ARE CONDUCIVE TO ADVENTURING ! PLEASE ALSO SEE ENCLOSED, A " SNACK " TO AID YOU ON YOUR ADVENTURE ! )

The next two pages contain lists, one of all the cities in Johto and one of all the cities in Kanto. Each city has what looks like the informal “title” of who they should be looking for written beside it, along with a brief but emphatic (and... slightly-stilted) description of the individual. And the two pages after that are actually a pair of sticker sheets.

And, true to its word... there is a granola bar stuck to the last page with only the word "SNACK" emblazoned on the wrapper in peeling letters.

OOC Info/FAQ

FIRST OFF: WHAT DOES THE GRANOLA BAR TASTE LIKE?

The granola bar, despite looking kind of suspicious (no nutrition information to be found ANYWHERE), will taste just fine (as a matter of fact, it's subtly reminiscent of some sweet nostalgic cereal or candy flavor from each eater's childhood...), and in fact be quite energizing! Any attempt to find out what company manufactures "SNACK" brand granola bars will fail. It just doesn't exist.

SECOND OFF: WHAT DO THE STICKERS LOOK LIKE??

The stickers are all of stars, planets, and various celestial bodies! The style of sticker varies depending on the recipient (much like the flavor of the SNACK) and what appeals most to them. They might be sparkly, chunky, fuzzy, or feature technicolor Littens.

OKAY NOW THAT THAT'S OUT OF THE WAY: WHAT'S THE TIMEFRAME FOR THIS, AND WILL IT BE THE ONLY EVENT THIS SUMMER?

This will not be the only event this summer! This is an informal, relaxed “background” event that will last from June 6th to September 6th, to allow for plenty of traveling time and leeway. There will be other events in July and August that this won’t interfere with!

IF EVERYONE GETS A BOOKLET, DOES THAT MEAN EVERYONE IS REQUIRED TO DO THIS?

Not at all! In spite of everyone receiving a booklet, people are free to participate as much or as little as they/their characters want. Whether they just go find the person/people in the city/cities they were already planning to be in during the summer, obsessively track down as many human "cryptids" as they can, or immediately toss their booklet into the nearest trashcan (RUDE, but), it’s up to you!

WHEN/HOW DO I LET THE MODS KNOW WHICH PEOPLE MY CHARACTER FOUND?

At the end of the event, there will be another OOC post where you’ll be able to let us know what happened with your scavenger hunts. As for “proof”, while we definitely don’t want to require a thread for each city, we also would prefer things not be 100% handwaved! So what we’ll be asking for is a “travel list” of where your character has been, with each location having EITHER a thread involving the encounter OR a brief written description of how it went.

HOW IS MY CHARACTER SUPPOSED TO FIND THESE PEOPLE?

Either by asking around or just looking street to street! In the spirit of the games, if there’s a person in a city who’s notable like this, chances are other locals will be able to point your character in the right direction based on the “title” Nephelis gave them. Some will be harder to find than others!

WHAT IF MY CHARACTER DECIDES TO CHEAT AND PUT STICKERS DOWN WITHOUT ACTUALLY FINDING ANYBODY?

For those who might be tempted to just put the stickers on whether they’ve gone and found the person or not, they’ll find that they seem to be magical in some way: if the person hasn’t really been found, the sticker will return to the sheet as soon as the booklet is closed again. No cheating! That completely defeats the purpose of this adventure!

SO WHO EXACTLY ARE ALL THESE PEOPLE?

We're glad you asked! Time to meet the players.

JOHTO

  • New Bark Town - "Mom": Well, most of you know this one already. Does she ever leave that house????? Maybe you’ll have to catch a glimpse of her through the windows for this sticker.

  • Cherrygrove City - Skippy: A young local kid with the uncanny ability to skip stones all the way across the lake on the west side of the city. Only comes out to the lake on sunny afternoons and spends hours looking for the perfect stones to skip until sundown. Usually accompanied by a Surskit.

  • Violet City - The Monk: Though there are many monks in the city who upkeep Bellsprout Tower, one in particular is notorious for not only his devotion to spiritual enlightenment, but his singular focus on training not Bellsprouts, but monkey-like Pokemon. If you meet him, he will intersperse spiritual sermons with trivia and overbiased praise of Aipom, Chimchar, the elemental monkeys, etc. and is not likely to stop unless you challenge him to a battle instead.

  • Azalea Town - Grampa Slowpoke: An elderly man whose facial structure is so strikingly similar to that of a Slowpoke that, if he were sitting in a crowd of them, you wouldn't be able to tell where he was at first or second glance. Can also apparently understand Slowpoke by the movements of their tails. Fairly reclusive and often shielded from excess attention from the locals. Be respectful or you could find yourself on the bad side of the entire town's population.

  • Goldenrod City - The Gold Woman: Formerly a frequent patron of the Celadon Game Corner back when it had slot machines, now it's more likely you'll find this middle aged woman lurking where you least expect her. Her clothes, her personal items, everything on her person is colored gold, to the point where you can sometimes see her glinting from a ways off at night if you happen to cross her path. She's not homeless, but she's certainly scruffy and relatively reclusive, and is often followed by stray Meowth trying to snatch something from her collection to bring back to their own hordes. She is, notably, banned from the Goldenrod Game Corner.

  • Ecruteak City - EPIC BOTTLE FLIP KID: Seriously are ghosts helping this preteen land flipped bottles so perfectly?? Frequently seen showing off his skill to anyone who will listen, to the somewhat baffled appreciation of many of the older, more traditional residents of the city. He doesn’t care that it’s an old meme, he honed this skill and damn it he’s going to make sure everyone sees it!

  • Olivine City - The Inky Sailor: An old sailor with tattoos covering his entire body, all from every single port he's ever landed in, many from foreign regions. He’s retired now, but frequently visits the docks and lighthouse with his loyal Octillery. For anyone interested in hearing wild, not entirely believable stories about other regions, this is the guy to talk to.

  • Cianwood City - The Swell Shell Fella: A backpacker in his 30's who came to Cianwood on his travels and never seemed to move on, setting up base camp on the fringes of the island by building a one-room hut made out of stones and dirt and grasses, but most notably the outside is completely covered in shells. It's in a constant state of repair and often moves locations, and is usually empty because the Shell Fella is out collecting more shells.

  • Mahogany Town - Frostine: A local teenage girl with a startling affinity for ice. No matter how cold it gets, she rarely seems bothered, only pulling on a cardigan when it gets bitterly freezing. When it's icy out, she never slips, and has an almost sixth sense when ice is too dangerous to cross (ie too thin on a lake, etc). If it's not wintertime, she's usually out in the Ice Path in places that you're most likely going to be stuck in without an Escape Rope to help you. Weirdly enough? Her favorite Pokemon is apparently Charmander.

  • Blackthorn City - Oakie Brown: A woman who lives decidedly off the grid in the mountains surrounding the city, and only comes down once in a blue moon if she is in need of medical treatment or a specific thing that the wilderness cannot offer her. Keeps to herself, but will talk to those who have an off-beat, adventurous spirit about the virtues of living as one with nature. Rumor has it that she's an even stronger Dragon-trainer than Clair is... but the only one who knows for sure is her, and she ain't talkin'.

    KANTO

  • Pallet Town - Music Man: An old man who’s lived in Pallet his entire life with his faithful Patrat, he’s known as the Music Man on account of the beautiful music boxes he hand-carves. They come in every shape and size, and some of them are even puzzle boxes too! But each and every one of them plays the Pallet BGM, so that even if he’s never left himself, everyone who buys one will take a bit of his home with them into the world.

  • Viridian City - The Sleeping Man: A grouchy old coot who used to sleep right across the path out of town pretty often, but now only does it once in a while. Give him coffee, and he'll feel great (and make you watch him catch a Ratatta). If you want to get around him, you're going to have to try not to wake him up or to placate his incredible need for caffeine.

  • Pewter City - Taxidermy Teddy: A man obsessed with crafting lifelike Pokemon (ENTIRELY FAUX) taxidermy, so much so that the inside of his house is like a natural history exhibit in its own right. While articulating bones and bringing Pokemon back to life through fossils is a normal thing, even fake taxidermy is a bit much for the many of the people of Pokeworld, so he's often shunned by the mainstream museum community. If you can meet him though, he'd be so elated to show you his work!!!

  • Vermillion City - The Conductor: A man born with an unusual ability to conduct electricity through his body without being hurt. Once on the sideshow circuit, he's retired to the seaside and sometimes demonstrates his ability for passersby - give him a live wire, and if he holds it tightly he isn't hurt, and can make lightbulbs glow in his free hand and prickle those who touch him with visible static electricity. Honestly he's a real nice guy and is always happy to show people what he can do.

  • Celadon City - The Herbal Hermit: Some people consider this more a location than a person, but the title often passes to the person who owns and runs 'The Herbal Hermit', a herbal product store that is nigh impossible to find. Currently the store is run by a woman in her thirties who used to be a trainer in the Celadon Gym, and is almost as knowledgeable about plants and flowers as Erika herself. She maintains an extensive botanical and Poke-botanical collection for display alongside the usual store stock - if you've ever wanted to see variations of Venusaur leaves, preserved puffs shed from Jumpluffs, or other unusual bits harvested from Grass Types, this is the the place to find it.

  • Lavender Town - Black Cat Mary: An older woman set in the ways of the days of yore who very vocally opposed the change of Lavender Town's tower into a Radio Tower. Once a priestess there in her youth, she's rumored to have turned to darker arts from other regions to try and sway public opinion against the Radio Tower, but only manages to cause minor supernatural nuscances that might actually be the local Ghost Pokemon appreciating her sentiment. Doesn't get out much, but is sure loud and PRESENT when she does.

  • Fuschia City - Ryan the Ninja: A local 3rd grader obsessed with everything ninja to the point where he believes he might as well be Naruto. Always does the arms-back run and loves to jump while doing it. The way you can tell who he is from the other loud, imaginative 3rd graders is that he is making real ninjutsu hand movements, even though nothing happens when he does them... that and he probably throws shuriken (read: paper folded to look like shuriken but with none of the aerodynamics) at strangers.

  • Saffron City - Jingles the Mime: Nobody likes this guy. He's creepy. He does his mime act constantly. Rumors abound that he drove off his ex wife by never breaking character once he got his dream mime job. He attempts to join in on random street acts that pop up, but mostly goes ignored. Dresses exactly like a Mr Mime, but his human limbs give him away, adding to the unsettling aura around him. He's actually harmless, if often accosted by Fighting Pokemon who think he's an actual Mr Mime. Weirdly enough, actual Mr Mimes avoid him like the plague.

  • REWARDS WERE MENTIONED! HOW DO THEY WORK?

Was the chance to meet Jingles the Mime not reward enough? No? Well, the item rewards for participating in Nephelis’ scavenger hunt will be on a tier system! Each participant will get two items. Each “tier” will have an automatic prize and then several options, out of which you can choose one. The choice will be made OOCly, not ICly. ICly, the morning after the event, characters will wake up with their rewards sitting on top of the booklet. If they want to continue seeking out the remainder of the people at whatever pace they like, they absolutely can, they just won’t get prizes for it after the event’s official end. The tiers are:

  • 1 to 3 people found: A pair of Wise Glasses and your choice between: a photograph of someone/a location from home, a Pokemon egg of choice with ONE egg move, OR an extra sheet of magical stickers that will never run out.

  • 4 to 9 people found: A pair of Choice Specs and your choice between an item from home that could fit in a pocket, a Pokemon egg of choice with THREE egg moves, OR a SNACK bar will innocuously and unobtrusively appear in hand’s reach whenever you’re craving a snack on the road and there’s nothing else around.

  • 10 to 15 people found: A Wide Lens and your choice between: an item from home UP TO the size of a sack of flour, a Hidden Ability candy, OR a region map with pawprints over Nephelis’ favorite out-of-the-way locations to visit (which we will elaborate on if chosen).

  • 16 to 18 people found: A Zoom Lens and your choice between: an item from home UP TO the size of a sofa, a shiny Pokemon egg, OR the opportunity to give Nephelis a pat on the head (which we will describe/thread).

Note that all items from home must follow the existing rules: no pets, weapons, or vehicles, and all magical items will be stripped of powers.

Can characters team up to find a person? Like if say Sasha offered to help someone find Oakie Brown at the same time she needs to. Just wanted to check!

I have some questions about the proofs.

For threads, I'm not sure what you mean by a thread with the npc if you're by yourself without anyone else to tag off of. Just like writing something in a post with your character catching up with the npc? Or making a one-sided thread off the post? Basically I'm confused with how it's a thread if it's just one person.

And just to clarify, writing a description of what happened rather then a thread, totally counts as a proof itself?

Awesome. I'm looking forward to doing both!

    Thanks!

    Just a quick question!

(probably nothing that will come up for me personally, but I thought it was good to get some clarification on this)

What if someone apps in a character between now and September 7th? Will they still be able to participate/receive a booklet somehow?

I have an extremely important question.

The magical stickers that will never run out - are these the stickers they're using for the Scavenger Hunt itself or will they be kind of a user choice if our character goes with this?

And if the cosmic theme is how they stay, is it safe to assume that we can use the Look Upon The Stars merchandise from the Pokemon Center as inspiration for designs? (Say, Legendary Pokemon constellations as well as plants, etc)

/slides back in with another question

If our character finds 7 of the people on the list but wants claim the endless sheet of stickers as their second part of the prize...is that okay? B'D
