never thought I'd see the day

HEY GUESS WHAT TIME OF YEAR IT IS.

THAT’S RIGHT IT’S APRIL, WHICH MEANS IT’S TIME FOR...

THE BASICS

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS POKEMON PROM?

Pokemon Prom is a yearly event where everybody and their Pokemon get to go PARTY HARD in sweet sweet formalwear and generally have a good time. We’re talkin’ music, dancing, big ol’ buffet tables, all that good stuff.

SO WHAT’S THIS YEAR’S SWANKY VENUE GOING TO BE?

Well, the E4 is still not too eager to invite people back to their mansion, and Selphy was booked up (and maybe also still recovering emotionally from having her lovely beach bombarded by giant extradimensional jellyfish)... so this year, Prom will be held….

… THAT'S RIGHT, bring your swimsuit and your flippy-floppies, because Prom 2019 will be aboard the S.S. Aqua!

ISN’T THE S.S. AQUA KIND OF PRICEY? AND DON’T THE CRUISES USUALLY LAST A WHILE?

In the tradition of Prom, the event will be free of charge for all characters who wish to attend, and transportation TO Olivine City where the cruise is boarding will be provided if characters are unable to warp there themselves. This will also be a special weekend cruise, one of those that just takes passengers out to sea for a few days and heads back in when the party’s done, rather than stopping in ports or acting as a ferry between locations. This means that the entirety of Prom will take place aboard the ship.

Starting April 13th, standard invitations delivered by Pidgey will have started making their way into player characters’ hands, complete with photos and descriptions of the famed cruise ship and its amenities. Included in the invitation will be instructions to utilize the warp pads located in each Pokemon Center to make your way to the Olivine City docks! Or, if your character has not been to either city before (or doesn’t want to buy a Magnet Train ticket to get over to Johto), they may request a flying escort to pick them up near their location.

MY CHARACTER’S REALLY NOT INTERESTED IN PARTIES, BUT I AM! HOW DO I MOTIVATE MY STICK-IN-THE-MUD CHARACTER TO ATTEND?

We’ve tried to include a little something for every type of character, including more introverted or adventurous ones! Cruises are all about luxury, which means there’s spaces for relaxation as well as for wild party animals. Characters who prefer solitude and would rather avoid a fancy shindig will have quieter lounge areas to hang out in while their rowdier friends can go nuts in the water-park and arcade areas without bothering the sunbathers and martini-sippers! And even better, unlike proms past-- there’s enough rooms for everyone to get either a solitary or a double! No more dormitory-style lodgings or tents on the beach (even if those Resort Gorgeous tents had been surprisingly nice!).

Still no? Perhaps their friends or Pokemon can encourage them into it! This event isn't just for the trainers, after all — it's a get-together for your rosters, too! (Why should the humans be the only ones to have fun, right?) The ship has plenty of room for Pokemon to spend time together, play, and interact! Maybe their Marill still has a nervous tic from the Nihilego attack last year and will not take no for an answer on the subject of a relaxing cruise.

WELL, I HATE PARTIES AND PARTY EVENTS.

That’s okay! As we said, the event is entirely optional, and no one is obligated to come! Granted, characters who choose to stay behind will probably find that there’s not a whole lot going on in the interim, but hey, peace and quiet! Either way, if you'd rather avoid this event altogether, you're perfectly welcome to!

I’M NEWER TO THE GAME AND HAVE NEVER ATTENDED A PROM BEFORE! WHAT’S IT LIKE?

It’s a big party event serving as an excuse for characters to all get together in the same place, with the bonus of picking out fun outfits. The log will have a detailed description of the ship and its amenities when it goes up, which will also be linked here when it’s ready. And if you’ve still got questions, feel free to ask them below!

If you’re curious about prom events in general, check out the first and second Pokemon Prom posts from years past!

THE PAST FEW PROMS HAVE ENDED WITH AN INVOLVED EVENT WITH WIN CONDITIONS, WILL THIS ONE?

Not quite this year! While there will be an Unexpected Encounter arising towards the end of the event, it will not be a disastrous nice-time-ruiner like what happened at the previous two Proms (Team Rocket and Ultra Beasts crashing the party. RUDE, am I right?). It will also not have a separate log--the party is the main event! The encounter will, however, play into the same larger subplot that last month’s swarm event did and tie directly into future events. Also unlike previous Proms, while it WILL be possible for characters to contribute to a very loose “win” condition, there won’t be be sign-ups ahead of time or percentage-based check-in threads to keep track of.

Details about the Mystery Encounter will be revealed on Saturday the 20th!

But the main takeaway here is that the cruise ship isn’t going to sink or be blown up by Team Rocket or abducted into hyperspace by Ultra Beasts-- by and large, everyone will be able to enjoy their weekend without having to run screaming for their lives at any point.

Unless they’re really scared of the ocean.

Which… well, they’re on a cruise...

WILL THERE BE PRIZES?

Depending on the outcome of the Mystery Encounter, yes! While we’re not revealing them just yet for the sake of spoilers, they will not be out of the ordinary for prizes usually offered after Prom events.

ARE THERE LIMITATIONS OR RESTRICTIONS ON WHAT POKEMON OUR CHARACTERS CAN BRING?

As always, characters may bring up to six of their Pokemon with them. However, since this Prom takes place on a ship, especially large or heavy Pokemon are not permitted aboard. The captain respectfully asks that your Steelix stay home please. :(

The exception to this rule is large water types (such as Lapras or Wailord), who may swim alongside the ship and would be provided with supervision, fun, and refreshments of their own. In fact, the invitation will include a note informing trainers that while the S.S. Aqua is of course prepared with plenty of lifeboats and built to withstand all manner of maritime emergencies, it is ALWAYS a good idea to bring along a trusted water type or two while traveling overseas!

WHAT'S THE ITINERARY OF THE EVENT?

IC Itinerary:
Friday, April 19th: All aboard! Characters will get on the boat in the morning and have the rest of the day to settle in and enjoy the ship. The S.S. Aqua will launch at 3 PM.
Saturday, April 20th: Characters can keep having fun throughout the day, and then at night it’s time for the main party! Late after the party has wound down will also be when the Mystery Encounter occurs!
Sunday, April 21st: In the early evening (somewhat behind schedule), the ship will dock back in Olivine and characters will disembark.
OOC Itinerary:
Friday, April 19th: The Prom Log will be posted, which will be a catchall for all three IC days of the prom.
Saturday, April 20th: The Mystery Encounter will be revealed under its own thread in the main log for characters to respond to.
Monday, April 22nd: As Sunday is a holiday, we will be giving people until Monday evening to respond to the encounter thread and posting the outcome either that night or the next morning.

MYSTERY ENCOUNTER!

WHO'S THAT POKEMON?!

It's LUGIA!

AW, JUST LUGIA?

Well, it's kind of foggy... hard to see if there's anybody else out there...

ARE OUR CHARACTERS IN DANGER?

Not really! The captain might be on a perpetual luxury cruise nowadays, but he used to be a rougher kind of sailor and has seen some crazy stuff in his time! He knows better than to mess with Lugia and Lugia, despite its aggravation, doesn't really want to mess with a ship full of people either.

WHAT'S LUGIA EVEN DOING?

Swimming around looking kind of pissed off, mostly-- easing off when the ship turns away from the worst of the pools and fog, but slapping the water and yelling if the ship turns towards them. Maybe he's actually trying to HELP the ship avoid danger, but he still seems awfully grumpy that they're there in the first place!

SO OUR CHARACTERS CAN JUST KEEP PARTYING IF THEY WANT?

Honestly, yeah, assuming they're not glued to the windows for a glimpse. The water's noticeably choppy so some seasickness might happen, and they can't go ride those crazy waterslides while Lugia's out there splashing things, but aside from that, everyone is free to carry on with their merriment and the cruise staff will be doing their best to maintain order and make sure everyone not involved with the captain's efforts is still having a good time.

BUT WHAT IF OUR CHARACTERS WANT TO HELP THE CAPTAIN/FIGURE OUT WHAT'S UP?

The captain will be very interested in hearing any theories on what might have driven the normally-reclusive Lugia this far away from the Whirl Islands, and of course is especially interested in talking to anyone that's seen or interacted with the Legendary Pokemon before. But even if you don't fall into that category, you and your Pokemon can help the crew by using Whirlpool and Defog to clear obstacles and better enable the ship's safe passage through Lugia's Wild Ride!

And maybe if ENOUGH people help out, it'll be a little easier to see what's going on...

WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO TO UNLOCK THE "WIN" CONDITION FOR PRIZES AND STUFF?

Just comment directly to the unlocked Mystery Encounter toplevel over here! You can thread out reactions with other characters, or just leave a general description of what kind of aid your character is contributing if you'd rather focus on your party threads!

WHAT COUNTS AS HELPING? IS IT ONLY USING DEFOG AND WHIRLPOOL?

Those are only the recommended ways of helping-- you can try anything if you want! Pose like Leo on the bow of the ship! Get your Wailords to circle around the ship and form a living Wailord barrier! Throw Berries in the water! Harass the cruise chefs to make a giant Lugia-shaped croissant as an offering and throw that in the water! It might not be useful, but it was worth a try!

CAN MY CHARACTER GO SWIMMING WITH LUGIA?

... That... that would not be a good idea, and the crew would stop you.

THE CREW CAN'T STOP ME. THEY CAN'T STOP FREEDOM.

... Okay. Okay.

Well, if someone does decide to abandon all concept of safe seafaring procedures, break ranks, manage NOT to get sucked down into a whirlpool, and swim directly towards the angry ocean god, first of all, he's just kind of going to look at them like this. And then he's going to spin around and give them a massive aquatic booty-bump directly back onto the S. S. Aqua.

They will achieve eternal glory among the Legend Seekers. And probably also have a broken tailbone.

I HAVE OTHER QUESTIONS!

Ask 'em right down below in the Questions thread!

THE AFTERMATH...

WHO'S THAT POKEMON?!

It's ARTICUNO!

WHY IS IT IN JOHTO??

WHAT'S GOING ON WITH ITS WING?!

Hmm, good question... Articuno's so shiny and beautiful but that one wing looks dull and colorless as a rock... poor thing. :(

CAN WE GET BACK TO THE ISLAND AND INVESTIGATE?

Sadly, no. The Captain feels that they've already trespassed on the two Legendaries' personal space enough and doesn't want to distress them even further by trying to approach them, and no matter how tired Lugia is, he is isn't going to let anyone get any closer.

WHAT IF OUR CHARACTERS GO BACK ON THEIR OWN AFTER THE CRUISE IS OVER?

They will find the island free of fog and whirlpools, but completely deserted! However, dedicated searchers who go over the island with a fine-toothed comb might be lucky enough to find a Frosted Feather or Silver Wing for their troubles, proving at least that the two Legendary Birds were in fact there and not a mirage as they're so often thought to be.

AFTER ALL THAT, WHEN IS THE S.S. AQUA OFFICIALLY MAKING PORT?

The cruise ship will arrive back in Olivine Harbor about six hours later than originally scheduled to, past noon on Monday rather than early in the morning. Each passenger will receive a discount voucher for future trips aboard the ship for the inconvenience.

WHAT ABOUT PRIZES?

While the Captain can't really offer anything except his sincere thanks for those who helped the storm-busting efforts, news about Legendaries travels fast across the mainland, and those who attended CRUISE PROM 2019 may find themselves reached out to by a couple of different parties who are very interested in obtaining eye-witness accounts and photographic evidence of the remarkable sighting...

  • The Aether Foundation was alarmed and concerned about Articuno's abnormal condition, and is offering a reward of 10,000P and your choice of 1 Hidden Ability Candy or 1 re-usable TM for anyone willing to share photos or information with them on the subject.

  • The Legend Seekers were slightly less alarmed and concerned (although Greg of the original Legend Seeker bros has made several extremely emotional network posts about how Lugia "was just PROTECTING HIS BOY!!!!") and more just wildly excited, but are offering a reward of 5,000P and your choice of a specially-bred Shiny or Hidden Ability egg. Apparently there's a pretty prestigious Breeder out there who happens to be a member of the club!

  • CAN MY CHARACTER SELL THE INFO/PHOTOS TO BOTH AND GET MAXIMUM REWARDS?

There's technically nothing stopping them from doing that... go make that money, honey!

DID ANYTHING ELSE STAND OUT ABOUT THE ENCOUNTER, HOWEVER BRIEF?

Hmm... as a matter of fact, there is one little thing that observant trainers might have picked up on if they weren't completely entranced by the sight of Articuno...

Those who brought their rescue Grookey, Scorbunny, or Sobble with them may have noticed them react a little more strongly to the legendary ice bird than just regular awe. Maybe something a little more like joy or excitement. Or, once they noticed the seemingly-damaged wing... sadness and concern.

Do they know each other from somewhere...?

    I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS!!

out of curiousity, would there be any wild Pokemon available either on the ship itself or travelling alongside the boat? obviously not like, anything rare or completely out of place, but maybe Rattata that try to mooch food off of people, Klefki that steal room keys, Wingull perched on balconies...

BELATED AND ON THE WRONG ACCOUNT BUT

Are drinks allowed poolside for people and/or Pokemon? Are there Pokemon-safe/non-alcoholic cocktails? Literally all I want is Dank Weed occasionally extending her snoot outta the pool to sip some frilly berry juice with a little plastic sword in it.

HELLO AGAIN if say i am playing a dumbass who may try to ride a lapras up to lugia along with at least one other ghostbuster, to get a closer look and try to see why lugais pissed, first of all, does that count towards the "win" condition whatsoever or are we basically just being stupid for no reward and without helping the cause

second of all, it says that we have to comment directly to the toplevel to help unlock the win condition, but would replying to someone else's comment and helping THEM count as well? or should i still make a direct comment of what venkman can do to actually be useful?

hope that makes sense! thank you

Okay so if one brings their rescue Grookey, Scorbunny, or Sobble back to the now abandoned Island... will they do anything in particular/have any particular response?

This is such a useless question, hello

Ooph, and to make sure I understand the rewards should a character wish to go for one or both: are these re-usable TMs, Shiny Eggs, or Hidden Ability Eggs randomly generated?

Sweet as, thank you so much! Though now I'm laughing at the idea of characters ending up with pokemon they'd never pick for themselves... what beautiful possibilities!
