Snorunt Fortunes: the returning

There exists an old superstition that Snorunts bring luck and good fortune to those that treasure them. 'Look into a rich man's past, and you will find a Snorunt there' is something you might hear from older relatives to explain why some of us enjoy more fortune than others.

Well. It turns out those old people are right. Up to a point, at least.

Whether they actually bring good or bad luck themselves or if there is some luck-giving entity that is just very concerned with Snorunt Treatment is something that can be discussed at length, but the fact remains that how you treat a Snorunt can definitely affect your luck in life. And today, characters get to experience that for themselves.

Today, wherever your character may roam, they'll find Snorunts there. Even if they just stay at home, they might find their garden teeming with Snorunts or that the little creatures have somehow managed to get into their kitchen and have turned their fridge into a nice little hang-out. It's almost like a normal swarm, and it is possible for characters to catch the Snorunts if they want, however, unlike a normal swarm, the way your character interacts with the Snorunts will affect their luck for the duration of a month (Up to February first).

Comment on this post with your character, and how they might be dealing with the Snorunts swarming everywhere. Are they ignoring them? Trying to catch them? Will they play with them, and if a Snorunt tries to get into their home, how will they react? Don't worry, we are not looking for an essay, just a line or two is enough.

Based on that, your character will receive one of five fortunes for the coming month. These range from Great Luck, Just a bit Lucky, ??? Luck, Just a bit unlucky, to Great Misfortune and can affect anything from making your character particularly vulnerable to tiny little mishaps or fortunes to actually affecting things like the likeliness of them encountering/breeding a shiny pokemon or how many levels their pokemon can gain.

Mind you though, that these Snorunt are rather unpredictable. What could lead to a great fortune from one Snorunt could be taken as a complete insult by another Snorunt. Like someone once said, life is like a completely randomly decided fortune by some website generator; you never know what you are going to get!

Oh, and as always, this event is entirely optional!

Riz is working a parttime job at a pokemart these days, so he has no time to play. Instead, he'll spend his whole shift shooing them out of the store. You ain't got no money, you can't come here.

Despite Riz's unwelcoming behavior, the Snorunts are persistent. They think Riz is just playing a game! What fun to try and sneak into the PokéMart without him seeing!

As a result, Riz will be experiencing Great Luck throughout January! At some point during the month, Riz will be contacted by a mysterious independent newspaper. You see, they've overheard about an Otherworlder who has....thoughts about the Jennies, and they've been looking for people to corroborate their ideas with. They want him to come in for an interview to discuss his detective experience and share his theories! And he'll be paid for his time. Looking into the source of contact reveals that the newspaper is run by a weird fringe group of conspiracy theorists who have way too much money to pour into their hobbies.

If Riz accepts the offer and goes in for the interview, the interviewer will be impressed by his investigative prowess. He'll direct him towards a few other individuals who could use the services of a private detective that the Jennies haven't been able to help with--a case of a kidnapped Pokémon, a missing persons incident, and so on and so forth. They're even offering to report on what Riz does to solve each case. Who knows? Maybe from this, Mr. Gukgak could build up a reputation of being the private eye to call upon!

Kimmuriel lets his Glalie shepherd them around and play with them as she likes, but generally pays very little attention to them at all, going about his business as usual.

He does leave some candy out for them to take away or eat, mostly because he doesn't eat candy at all and he feels like it would be better to give it to creatures who might actually like them than waste them.

The Snorunts take the candy like the reverent offerings they were clearly meant to be. (right?)

As a result, Kimmuriel will be experiencing A bit of good luck throughout the month. This comes in the form of finding the single-use TM Ice Spinner on the ground. Strange, this TM isn't even available in stores. How did it get here?

Cloud is pretty flustered and uncomfortable around all these Snorunts. Why are they swarming him and the whole apartment he shares with Zack? Do they want something? He mostly tries to avoid them and ends up sort of staring at them in awkward silence when they don't listen to his quiet shooing, but at one point, he opens the fridge and a Snorunt jumps out of it, startling the crap out of him (he may have cussed about it). Maybe they're hungry and if he feeds them, they'll go away? So mostly, whenever the Snorunts get too close, he tosses berries for them to chase and tries to get them to Go Somewhere Else. If any of them show particular interest in battling or befriend any of his Pokemon, though, he would consider catching one, or at least battling a bunch of them with his own team for practice.

The Snorunts are masters of social situations and pick up on the small clues that maybe Cloud isn't super thrilled to see them. Just maybe.

As a result, Cloud will be experiencing A Bit of Bad Luck. Maybe everybody he faces out on the road is broke after Christmas, but for the rest of January, he'll only be earning half as much from trainer battles as normal.

OH HELL NO. NOT AGAIN.

This time, Felix is prepared. The instant he sees Snorunts in the house, he's assembling a team - he has exactly six Fire Pokemon, so those are the six he's keeping with him all day, everywhere he goes. And if any Snorunts even think about approaching him or messing with his stuff or his team, those six are out of their balls and joining Felix in intimidating and threatening the Snorunts until they (hopefully) go away.

The Snorunts Will Remember This.

As a result, Felix will be experiencing some Great Misfortune (what else) throughout January. For the rest of January, everyone who looks at him, will be under the impression that he is the best person in the whole world to share their problems with. Or just talk about the weather (dreadful, isn't it?). Or has he heard about the latest gossip that--

Yes, for one whole month, no matter how much he glowers, Felix will attract endless amounts of Small Talk.

Cordy might halfheartedly try to catch a Snorunt, but for the most part she'll just try to coax them out of the apartment and do snowball fights outside

Just please, let her girlfriend stay warm (she's staying in the same apartment as Vierna)

The Snorunts are very excited by the snowball fights! They don't even bother trying to get inside as clearly all the fun is out here.

As a result, Cordy will experience Great Luck in January. This'll come in the form of a Sizzlipede that'll show up inside of her apartment one day. On closer inspection, it'll be revealed that it has the hidden ability Flame Body. No need to worry about keeping warm when you've got this many-legged little furnace around!

(The Sizzlipede will be level 23)

Oh here we go again it seems! Emet knows these little bastards' game, where it seems no matter what you do, they will either be nice or screw you over in equal measure, and so he's ignoring these little hellions as best he can when they show up on the ranch. He will step around them, not even cast them a single glance or the like! What will come, will come, and he's certain he won't be so lucky as last time.

The Snorunts are furious when they realise they are being ignored and they will repay Emet in a like manner. Which means sitting here he can definitely see them and Ignore Him Very Hard. Unfortunately for them, this will not have the effect they are going for.

As a result, Emet will be facing A bit of Bad Luck during January. At some point, someone will take a random picture out on the street that just happens to contain Emet. That's not the bad part.

The bad part is that somehow that picture ends up on the internet and Emet, who really was just making one of his standard 'grumpy grandpa' face becomes the hot new meme template. He'll end up with his own entry on knowyourmeme (Annoyed Grandpa) and will be seeing his face everywhere this month.

Ashe welcomes the Snorunts with homemade pokemon treats bought out by his pokemon. Ashe and his pokemon will play with them. He'll make sure they don't run out of treats too.

The Snorunts are going to eat so many treats.

As a result of this, Ashe is going to experience A bit of Good Luck during January. This comes in the form of a rock in his shoe.

Wait a minute, this doesn't really sound like good luck, does it?

Well, when he removes the peddle, it'll turn out to be a Nugget! How did that get in there, we truly do not know.

Once again! Byleth wasn't fussed the last time they were around, and he will gladly, calmly coexist with them as he would many other pokemon. He greets them when he sees them, occasionally shares food, but otherwise acts as normal.

The Snorunts do not seem to be impressed by Byleth's attitude. How dare he not roll out the red carpet for their arrival.

As a result, Byleth will be experiencing Great Misfortune in January. Through a stunning display of Jenny incompetence, his face will end up being mixed up with that of an actual criminal. As such, Byleth is going to have to deal the whole month with Jennies trying to arrest him or having to duck them. If he does get arrested, he will get released eventually with an apology, but they keep making the same mistake.

Lorenz wasn't here for the Snorunts last time. But only just. And he's heard Felix ranting and raving about this since the first glimpse of one. Now he's, understandably, wary. He doesn't have a decent ice-type though so he will try his hand at catching one.

The others in the house are certainly feeding them enough so any that manage to escape Felix's wrath will get an offering of tea and a few lines of poetry read to them.

The Snorunts must not like this specific flavor of tea. Or maybe they just don't like poetry. Either way, clearly, Lorenz has done something to insult them with how hurriedly they leave the area.

As a result, Lorenz will be experiencing Great Misfortune throughout January. Any time that Lorenz is standing around idly, there's a significant chance that something on him will catch on fire spontaneously. It seems that the source of the mysterious fires is a mischevious Litwick that keeps following him, but no matter how hard Lorenz tries to fireproof himself, something will end up on fire regardless.

Kirishima continues not to blame the Snorunts for the odd luck he's had the previous two years he's run across them. This year, he'll try to coax them back outside with the prospect of building a snow fort, assisted by his frosmoth to give them more material and his Hisuian growlithe for hand-warming breaks. Bao the growlithe is zealously playful and protective in equal measure, however, so mishaps are bound to occur if the vibe check is not passed on either side.

The Snorunts get into some rough playtime with Bao. It's to be expected when you have a big, enthusiadtic Hisuian Growlithe playing with some Little Guys! Unfortunately, this does mean the Snorunts get punted around a bit, and they end up a little miffed at that.

As a result, Kirishima will be experiencing a bit of bad luck throughout January. The next time he goes to pick up hair dye for himself at the local PokéMart, his shade of red will be out of stock. His only option is to either not dye his hair or select an off-brand shade of his dye. Sad! Whatever shade he picks will also have a chance of causing any Tauros that spots it to charge at him.

Absolutely nothing can go wrong with a meeting between a bunch of fire, rock, and fighting/steel doggos and fragile ice types. Nothing!

Lupa and the pack are more than happy to welcome the Snorunts and treat them kindly, as long as they aren't a threat to Radley's business. He's there to protect it, after all. He'll be ruthless in protecting the business if it comes down to it, but the Snorunts are harmless and there's no way a misunderstanding could occur, right? ...right?

If misunderstandings don't happen, there will be offers of food and playtime, and appropriate accommodations for Ice-Type comfort. He'll even be careful to make sure the Snorunts are interested in battling before battles. (The... uh "Delibird Incident" has taught him that battles aren't always what randomly approaching pokemon want) The many fire types on his team will try to be careful about their heat! And his Alolan Vulpix will be there to cool down any that get overheated.

Oh, dear. Unfortunately, the Snorunts don't take very kindly to Lupa's ruthlessness when protecting Radley's business, and they end up completely misinterpreting his motives.

As a result, Lupa will be experiencing Great Misfortune throughout January. Anything that Lupa touches will have a chance of breaking in ridiculous ways. Holding someone else's PokéGear? Oops, looks like the case cracked. Taking a plate from a waiter? That waiter slipped, and now the plate is shattered and your food on the floor. The cause? A naughty little Haunter, intent on causing chaos in Lupa's life. Oh, dear.

G'rhyf is definitely curious about these little guys running around! They happen to be cooking up some sweets, and will offer to share.

The Snorunts are greatly appreciative of the sweets! They take them and eagerly munch upon them. Delicious!

As a result, G'rhyf will be experiencing a bit of good luck throughout January. Any time that G'rhyf is out and about and needs a small, low-cost item, they'll be able to find it almost immediately. Someone just happened to leave a revive in the grass, or they just happened to drop this Pokéball in the trash, so on and so forth, or there's a handful of change tucked under a cushion to help cover for their restaurant bill. How conveniently placed! The Snorunts smile upon them.

SNORUNT TIME!!!!! Chip gonna romp around and play with the Snorunts so much! Also look, look, there's a big treehouse and all the little buddies are invited!! Tree for the trees!!!

Unfortunately for Chip, it seems like the Snorunt are unable to make their way up to the treehouse, no thanks to their stubby little legs and arms. They're slightly miffed that Chip didn't account for this!

As a result, Chip will be experiencing a bit of bad luck throughout January. Any time they want to reach something off a tall shelf or something else that's high up, the item will be just out of reach. Any efforts to grab it will result in it being pushed further out of reach. If they try to climb up and grab it for themselves, it'll end up moving on its own to a higher place. Seems like a mischievous Sableye is intent on playing keep-away....

Claude, being a smart man, has come to a conclusion about the Snorunts - which, if anything, could be summed up as 'Snorunts gonna Snorunt'. Essentially, he's decided that nothing any of them do really affects how the Snorunts are going to react to them, and they have no real control over the actions of these fickle pokémon! People will try to please them or drive them away, and get totally unpredictable results no matter what they do that has no bearing on how aggressive or conciliatory the approach is!

So, Claude's decided he's not really going to do anything special at all when the Snorunts arrive. Instead, he just treats them with the same casual friendliness he would treat any wild pokémon with while he goes about his day more or less like normal. Maybe he'll toss one or two a snack; if any of them seem interested in battling, he'll indulge them. But for the most part, he goes about his business, and lets them go about theirs with simple cheerful acknowledgment of their presence.

Part of him does kind of hope that simply being treated like normal pokémon might appeal to the Snorunts, of course. Maybe they get exhausted being sucked up to or being treated like the harbingers of ill fortune. Maybe they'll like being treated normally. But he has no real expectations; after all, there's no predicting them. They might be offended he's not paying them any special mind, either...

Perhaps it's Claude's lack of fanfare and overall enthusiasm that ends up insulting the Snorunt. Perhaps they're just in a bad mood today. Whatever the case may be, it's clear he's somehow pissed them off.

As a result, Claude will be experiencing Great Misfortune throughout January. A disruptive Rotom has attached itself to his PokéGear and decided to make chaos. Every time Claude sends a message to someone else, it'll insert naughty words where he doesn't mean to include them, or it'll alter the meaning of his sentences entirely. For example, if Claude was telling someone where to meet him, it might change the location as he sends it to make sure they get lost. Alternatively, if Claude was saying "thank you" to someone, it might change it to "thank you, fartface". What a headache. And online etiquette was already so difficult to navigate.

Hawks hasn't forgotten the miserable molting of his pokémon from last year...and he's got some idea, this year, of what Snorunts do, and that they were responsible for the mess he had on his hands previously. But, he figures, maybe that's because he ignored them. So this year...well, maybe if he shows them a fun time, they'll be kinder?

So this year, he'll be offering the Snorunts the chance to be flown around by his bird pokémon! They might enjoy seeing the world from the air, right? Obviously it's opt-in; he'd never force an unhappy Snorunt to take a flight it didn't want to go on. He's also considerate enough to make sure his fire-type birds are NOT on offer for the rides, as a consideration. He doubts the Snorunts would be comfortable with that. Any Snorunt that likes can take a little flight, roughly the duration of a carnival ride, and then be placed back safely on the ground.

(Of course, Hawks carefully warns them before they go up to make sure they don't use any ice-type abilities or moves in the air, because it's important not to ice up a flying-type pokémon's wings on these flights for safety reasons.)

The Snorunts are excited to be picked up and flown around by Hawks' Pokémon, and they seem to thoroughly enjoy themselves! It's not every day that they're able to observe the world from this height.

As a result, Hawks will be experiencing a bit of good luck throughout January. As Hawks is traversing through the field, a glimmer in the grass will catch his eye. Looks like someone here left a Flying Gem! Well, finders keepers!

Well that's a new pokemon Zack hasn't seen. He likes their cute little faces and tries to see if one of them would like a treat, or even a hug. They kind of look cold to him. He looks around for something to maybe help them warm up and settles on a scarf, wrapping it around the first snorunt he sees. "There ya go lil fella. Hope that keeps you warm!" He doesn't mind seeing them around the apartment he shares with Cloud and while he did get to warm only one up he greets each one he finds with a smile and a pat on the head. He wouldn't mind catching one but he doesn't want to make a mess in the small apartment from a battle.

Oh, Zack. The Snorunt seem to be in a particularly fickle mood today, for they seem absolutely insulted that he hasn't gotten scarves for the rest of them! How dare he not think about the dozens of others they've brought with them?

As a result, Zack will be experiencing Great Misfortune throughout January. While he's walking down the street, a man trying to move items from his truck to a local store will trip and fall, splashing Zack with a strong, somewhat foul-smelling cologne. He'll apologize profusely for the accident. However, no matter how hard Zack tries to scrub it from his clothes, the smell lingers. Even if he changes clothes, the stench will rub off from his skin to the new clothes, and everything else he touches. The stench has a repelling effect, making it incredibly difficult to catch Pokémon--except for any nearby Stunky or Trubbish, who are drawn to it.
