Fourth Wall info-post

Fasten your seatbelts, because it is (almost) time for yet another Victory Road Fourth Wall!

From Friday the 19th to Sunday the 21th of May, Victory Road will once against be breaching its containment walls, dragging friend and foe alike into a maelstrom of weirdness and Pokemon shenanigans. For three days, the regions of Johto and Kanto will be saying goodbye to the laws of physics and common sense, and instead be ruled by the capricious whims of, well, whoever it is that causes these weird weekends to happen. We don't know who it is. Do you?

In any case, during this weekend, not only your characters will be dealing with a heap of nonsense, but people from outside the game can also take a little stab at having some Pokemon fun. In this info post, we will have a little Fourth Wall glossary for anyone who hasn't experienced one of these weekends before, but as is so common with these weekends, there will also be a little special going on this time. So, there also be a separate FAQ to answer your questions regarding that.

We figured that people might want a little bit of additional time to digest (and come up with plans!) for this Fourth Wall's special twist, which is why this FAQ will be going up a bit early, giving you all a chance to read over everything and ask any questions that you might have.

For more information, please read our little Fourth Wall FAQ

What is a Fourth Wall Event?

A Fourth Wall event is an in-game event where people from other games, random characters, even players themselves, just randomly interact with your characters. It's a literal breaking of that invisible "fourth wall" that separates the game-verse from... the rest of the internet. It’s meant to be a silly and fun time though all kinds of CR can take place during it.

How do you participate?

In short, a character makes a post in the comm or a top-level in the mod-posted catch-all and others tag it. Feel free to just tag around if you don’t want to start a thread of your own. You do not have to stick to your in-game character accounts during this event; you can use characters from other games, crack accounts, player accounts, etc to play!

What kind of characters can participate?

Anything and everything, from AU’s to characters from other DW games, ponies, disembodied heads, zombies, Arceus with a saddle, the players, Hello Kitty, and the list goes on...

What about characters coming in, can they have a Pokémon too?

Sure thing! You can bring in any Pokémon from any generation and challenge whoever you want for however much you want. Feel free to knock down or burn down anything. Ride Arceus into battle wearing nothing but a pineapple on your head. It's all good!

Current players are also allowed to have whatever else they want in their party, but all Legendaries will depart after the weekend is over. No keeping the Groudon that followed you home!

Can my character catch Pokémon to KEEP during the event?

Yes, they may! Feel free to saddle your character with some odd Pokémon they weren't expecting to have like a surprise Magikarp appearing inside their backpack.

There are some exceptions-- Pokemon not listed on the availability pages (Johto, Kanto, Sevii) cannot be kept after the event. For example, your character may encounter a wild Chansey in Lavender Town and keep their new friend, but you would not be able to catch and keep Articuno.

Characters also may not keep Pokemon that were given to them by visiting characters-- feel free to get vague and wibbly-wobbly about how a shockingly similar wild Pokemon (as long as it's on the Availability List!) wound up in your character's possession, but nothing that a visiting character gifts to a resident one will stick around once the weekend is over.

We’re also trusting that players will keep this reasonable, and stick to just one or two Pokemon to keep after the event.

Would my non-human character remain in their VR form for the event? What about powers?

Up to you! Your character can return to their original form, powers intact, or whatever you like! Have fun.

What about the environment?

With all the strange things going on, feel free to have your characters experience anomalies while they are travelling. Routes that took days to travel before can now be crossed in minutes. Characters can suddenly find themselves waking up in a different city altogether! If your character is far from where they started out when the event ends, feel free to have them remain there!

Can my character keep items they find during the Fourth Wall?

If this item is normally easily obtainable in the world of the game, like a Pokeball from the store or some choice rare berries, then yes. The exception to this is that we don’t want people keeping rare items or TMs.

Items like a new house that didn’t previously exist on their street, twenty Masterballs, a car, or piles of rubies that appeared during the event can not be kept. This includes items they may have had access to using their abilities or interacting with the warping environment, or any items from home they didn’t already have with them. They will all disappear at the end of the event!

Will my character remember the event once it’s over? What about previous Fourth Wall events?

It is up to you if your character’s memory suddenly becomes clear and they remember previous Fourth Walls during the span of the event.

Once the event ends, your characters’ memories will be somewhat fractured and mixed up. Recalling the events of the weekend will feel like recalling an especially vivid dream, but they are true memories. If you need a number for reference, figure that a character can remember about 80% of what happens during this three-day period.

What happened to those three days our characters mysteriously lost?

There's still no explanation for that one. The Professors won't even be reachable for a few days; don't expect them to answer your calls. To make it worse, you may not be where you were last...

Does this count for the activity check?

Fourth wall threads and posts carried out by characters who are current residents of VR are fair game for AC. Fourth-wallers and AU versions of a character currently in VR (for example, the same character played as from a different canonpoint, etc) do not count towards AC, even when played by the same player.

What if I just arrived and haven't made an in-character introduction post yet?

Feel free to arrive in the middle of the event! Your character will probably just be that much more confused. You may also hold off until after the event if you wish, in order to not become lost in the confusion.

What if I don't want to participate?

Fourth Wall is not a required event. However, it does affect the game's setting, so logging would have to be backdated or forward-dated to before or after the fourth wall. If you choose not to participate, your character may enter a glitch or be asleep during the event. They will still lose three days’ time and be disoriented like everyone else.

I have a different question…

No worries! Just comment here and we’ll get on that!

So, what's so special this time?

You see, during a normal Fourth Wall Weekend (or as normal as they get), non-human characters can regain their normal powers and bodies for the duration of the weekend. And while that is still possible this weekend as well, it also looks like, well… a lot of other people are also ending up with powers and non-human elements. Even people who definitely do not have any of these normally!

It's as if Arceus was carrying the big bag of Stored Stolen Powers, ready to pass them back to the people they belong to when it tripped and scattered them all around like marbles on a tile floor.

So as an extra little treat this Fourth Wall, we are essentially doing a 'Power' Swap event! As always, this is entirely optional (as is the whole Fourth Wall), so if you'd rather just have your character regain their normal powers/body, that is entirely possible. But if you are looking for some extra insanity this weekend, why not stick your character with an entirely new set of powers?

What counts as a power?

Good question!

Essentially, every non-human aspect that the game normally removes is up for grabs. Which means that for the purpose of this Fourth Wall, non-human species count as 'power' too.

However your character doesn't have to experience their new species/power in exactly the same way as the canon character in Victory Road normally does. As long as it fits within what is possible in said canon, it is okay.

Or rather, let's give some examples.

In the world of My Hero Acadamy, people have something called quirks, which are essentially superhuman powers. Because we have characters from the My Hero Acadamy world in our game currently, for this Fourth Wall, your character could gain their very own quirk! However, you don't need to limit yourself to having the exact same quirk as the characters currently in game have. As long as it would be something that counts as a quirk in canon, you can give it to your character!

Our only limitation is that a character that is currently in Victory Road has to have that canon ability.

Or, to go back to examples:

We currently have no characters from Naruto. That means your character couldn't suddenly become a Naruto-style ninja during this event. Similarly, while we do have a character from Star Wars, there are currently no Jedi in the game. So your character couldn't become a Jedi.

Just think of it this way: Arceus is (unintentionally or intentionally, we leave that judgement up to you) spreading the powers it has normally taken from your characters in new and funny ways. But Arceus can only give away what he has previously taken. So if there is no character like that in Victory Road, Arceus cannot give out those powers.

Can my character gain multiple powers?

Not at the same time, no.

However, because the Fourth Wall lasts several days, you are free to have your character experience different powers for each of the three days. It is entirely up to you if you want your character to have a slightly longer, and possibly more in depth experience, or up to three quick swaps in succession.

Can my character gain different powers from their own canon?

As long as someone with those powers is in the game, that is entirely fine! If your character's normal power is one that comes in various types, it's also fine to mix up the type.

For example, say you normally play a wizard from a DnD-type canon. DnD wizards come in various flavours. So if your powers are normally based around divination, you could, for this event, become a wizard that is focused on Illusion. However, it wouldn't be possible to suddenly become different kind of magic user all together, unless that kind if also represented in the game. So, changing from wizard to cleric is a no go.

How will I know what powers are available?

A good question -- and for the answer, we'd like to ask you guys for a bit of help. We don't know all your powers. But you do. (presumably). So if your character has any cool powers or inhuman abilities or different species that you think might be of interest to other people during this Fourth Wall, feel free to use this post as a way to explain the powers you have. You don't need to go very in depth; a useful wiki link is just fine. Just help out those who might want to do more than just switch to the powers/species/abilities of their closest CR.

(Listen, we know what half of you are planning, we see you, and we respect you.)

Can only one person end up with a certain power/does the swap need to be between two characters?

Nope! Just so nobody (especially none of us playing boring old human characters) gets left out, this is essentially a free-for-all power swap. If twelve people want quirks, twelve people can have quirks! If you want your character to gain the powers of character B, that character is not obligated to gain your character's powers. Just reach into the Big Bag of Stolen Powers and pick whatever you'd like.

Will our characters have immediate perfect control of their new powers?

That is entirely up to you. If you want to play out the funny shenanigans of someone getting used to the fact that they cast fireball, and oh crap, they definitely didn't mean to cast it at that, then go for it. On the other hand, if you'd rather go with all the fun that can come from a character that fully understands their new powers, you can do that to. The aim of the game is fun, however that might look for you!

Can the characters people are bringing in from outside the game have powers too?

Sure. Honestly, people are free to bring any sort of characters to the Fourth Wall, even ones that would not be allowed to be actually apped to VR. So if people want to give them powers, really, they can do whatever they want!

------

That covers all the questions we could anticipate beforehand, though we are sure people might still have others. So, feel free to ask them below. And please, if your character is the sort to have any kind of powers or inhuman features, if you could list them, that would very much be appreciated.

Well, Sion's powers will definitely upset Ryou! RIP Ryou I guess!

Sion actually kinda lowkey dreads 4th wall weekends thanks to how his powers work. And will feel SUPER bad about it if he finds out someone else got them, he felt guilty enough about the memory sharing that one time...
rolltoavoidpossession: (oh no)

[personal profile] rolltoavoidpossession 2023-05-03 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's any help (it's probably not), Ryou can at least somewhat deal with having a mad god living rent free in his head since he previously had the Ring Spirit doing that. Everything else would be new though...
lightningbearer: (something to say)

[personal profile] lightningbearer 2023-05-03 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeeeeah if it were JUST that it might not be as bad but like

there's that whole endless agony thing

Sion at least KNEW he was getting into a living hell and chose it anyway, but someone else being stuck with that off-guard? So, so much worse. D:
rolltoavoidpossession: (hope you're ready to play tomb of horror)

[personal profile] rolltoavoidpossession 2023-05-04 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
And to make it worse he'd have to figure out who to ask for help about it, assuming the Mad God doesn't say anything about Sion.

(At least I only plan to put him through it for one day of the fourth wall and not the whole weekend, but still.)

Haha yeah no the Mad Hero is uh. not a talkative guy. More just the silently brooding and stabbing type. In the few scenes depicting him and the demon interacting in past incarnations (or prior to being trapped) the demon does like 95% percent of the talking while the hero just "..." and such. XD

So yeah good luck getting info out of him unless you manage to assimilate his memories for yourself!
